This part of it sucks, imo. RP is a good dude (and comes to a fair number of Coog games) and has always been a pro. He’s just nearing the end of the road, and we have his role covered by someone better.
There shouldn’t be a scenario where he gets booed for staying, but that would definitely happen. If he takes the deal, he’ll get a standing ovation every time he shows up in Houston.
Oh, and it looks like it’s the Cubs or nothing…
It’s the Cubs as closer or just late-inning reliever for the Astros for Ryan Pressly. It’s his choice. Tigers are out.
I’m not a Pressly hater either. I still think he has some gas in the tank. But he’s not what he once was. I am not a fan of big contracts for closers. There are too many pitchers out there that can give you one great inning. I’ve always thought closing is as much about mindset as skillset.
Honestly, he should jump at the chance if he thinks he still has closer stuff (and all closers think that). I think he needs a change of scenery and a different pitching approach to do get that 9th inning back, and he won’t get either of those in Houston.
Pressly was a good teammate. But he dropped down a tier. Once he lost the closer role it was gonna be hard with that big contract above him. He might have another round in him. I just wish they would get on with it. Dana will probably will take a journeyman AAA pitcher in return.
That very well could happen. If trade happens it’s more abt Salary relief than trying to get equal value from player perspective. Again imo, but it’s a given this is abt opening up Salary relief.
Edit: Astros are trying to get someone to take 10-14 mil off their hands. I can see them msking the trade n still being responsible for some of RP Salary. Happens all the time in deals.
He might have hurt his arm during that time but MLB history is chock full of hall-of-famers that pitched on short rest. I just think he’s brittle as a glass figurine. I love the guy but he’d throw his elbow outta socket making a pastrami samich.
