I personally do not think he is bad enough at 2b to warrant that….and what you could see in LF could be far worse….plus you don’t know how much he may struggle AB while learning a new position……just not worth it IMO.
I agree, but part of it may be Altuve wanting to make the move because he knows he’s lost a step. I think the organization is also trying to pave the way for some of the youngsters to play IF.
Altuve’s defensive numbers at 2B are looking kind of grim, though.
Altuve, who won his only Gold Glove at second base in 2015, has slipped defensively in recent years. His outs above average, which peaked at plus-6 in 2018, dropped from plus-1 in ’22 to minus-3 in ’23 and minus-9 last year, which was the second-worst among qualifying second basemen. He had minus-13 defensive runs saved in ’23 and ’24. and minus-15 in ‘22.
Where Altuve fell in 2024 defensive rankings per Fangraphs (among qualifying 2nd basemen)
Range- 2nd to last
Outs above average (another way to measure range)- 2nd to last
Defensive runs saved- last
rPM (plus/minus runs saved above average) - last
FRV (Statcast’s fielding run value) - 2nd to last
Altuve’s range just has disappeared. Combination of being 5’4 and age related decline.
He definitely was hurt by the shift being gone but is still consider this all an overreaction.
Unless it’s to move Paredes to 2nd and give Dezenzo his shot I don’t want any part of it……moving to LF to let Dubon or guys on minor league contracts is bollocks.
Anyone who watched Altuve last year knows he has lost a step. Is Dooby a better defender now? Maybe.
2b insurance. More in article.

What did he have like 5 errors? Wasn’t he an all star last year? I don’t want him anywhere near the outfield.
The naysayers we’ll tell you he only had five errors because he doesn’t get to enough balls with his lack of range.
I’m not gonna deny his range has dropped, but I think it’s an overreaction……trying to reinvent the wheel.
If we’re worried about range from our IF, then Paredes wouldn’t be at 3B. That dude has put on some lbs.
And let’s be real about the Altuve thing - this is only happening because the Astros didn’t take any action to improve the OF despite losing Tucker and planning to move Alvarez to DH for most games. This is an effort to mitigate that failure.
Could have had Grichuk for 5M….maybe less to come home.
But he bats right handed so you know……
Guy hit .291 with 12 HR 46 RBI, an .875 OPS in 254 AB’s….but you know.
I’ll throw my 1 cent out there.
On March 27 vs NY Mets:
Jose Altuve will start in LF
& Mauricio Dubon will be at 2B. Meyers in CF & McCormick-- RF.
Edit: the others are easy.
Catastrophic
Nah, they’ll be alright Funk. Can’t have Powerhouse every year. We’re Spoiled big time.
Edit: my first 13+ yrs ( late 60s, 70s) watching or in most cases listening to every single game on my transistor radio, we never snifffed the playoffs. Wasn’t till 1980 when they finally made Postseason.
Need a few to step up from past yrs.
Well Dubon will have to be serviceable and Chas will have to rebound to 2023….you can’t have three holes in your lineup.
Hopefully Dezenzo and Melton have good springs….need something to not allow Joe to turn into Dusty in regards to veterans.
Well you just mentioned 2 of the players i had in mind that must step up. I think if thgs aren’t going well, they make move at ASB.
I’M sticking out n say Chas will have a very good year… very capable.
Well, Jesse. You won us over to Dubon. Maybe you can pull it off with Myers. Dubon is one of my favorite players now.
Haha. Yea, im like u he’s one of my fav also. He’s very versatile but I’m still not convinced Dubon can hold up production wise playing 80+% of the gms this coming year. That scares me. W his strong arm & range that i saw from him last yr at 2B, i do thk he would be big upgrade over Tuve… uhh only DEFENSIVELY.
Chas is one I need to Step up or move on outta way. It will be interesting. As I said no longer the Powerhouse, but can still make noise.
Edit: Meyers… no thks, someone else can claim him. I thk Chas can be adequate RF, w Gamel playing also being he bats from opposite side. If we do something at ASB, it would be a CF for me.
I hated Dubon for quite awhile as y’all know….he grew on me the last couple of years and I respect him as a utility player.
He is not a full time starter at any position IMO….the bat just doesn’t travel.
But as a utility guy he is valuable.
Rogers is not bad and gets on base a bit more than Dubon….we’ll see how loyal Espada is vs. Productivity if it comes to that….
He’s not worth looking up , but I thought Rodgers big issue was hitting. At Coors Field he was ok, but Road very poor. At least that’s what i thought i read few days ago. Pretty sure he won a Golden Glove, was thinking that’s where his value was in signing him. Sure I’ll see it again once signing gets announced if it goes through.
