Well, Luis Garcia doesn’t look ready for prime time yet. His velocity hasn’t progressed, and he’s gotten shelled against AA Tulsa tonight. He did manage 6Ks in 4.1 innings, but the 7 hits (2HR) and 2 walks - not good.
And what was up with that reviewed call at home plate? It looked pretty clear that the catcher didn’t get him with the glove, but Diaz was still called out. That sucked.
Don’t know the answer to that, but it’s been kind of up-and-down and I don’t think it’s back to pre-injury levels. His control had been pretty good in previous starts.
Seeing Tucker flame out makes me feel slightly better about our woes. I’m sure someone’s going to offer him a big contract but I guarantee it will be the worst contract in baseball in two years time.
I feel like UH football and Astros baseball never line up. So maybe the Astros late season collapse is a good omen for Willie and the boys.
Edit: decided to deep dive that feeling. UH’s golden era was in the 60s and 70s. Stros never made the playoffs. Then when they finally made the playoffs in ‘80 and ‘81 the Coogs fell off. Astros made the playoffs again in ‘86 then fell off right before the Run and Shoot teams of the late 80s. Coogs hit their dark age right as the Stros began to hit their stride with the killer B’s. Made the Series in ‘05 then fell off going a decade without making the playoffs. Coogs won CUSA the following year in ‘06 marking the beginning of our best decade since Yeoman. 2015 gave us one year of competitive overlap as the Coogs won the Peach Bowl the same year the Astros snuck back in the playoffs via the WC. Ofc the Coogs began to slide back down as the Astros went hard in the opposite direction. We did have ‘21 where the Stros won 95 games and the Coogs won 12 games but in their 64 seasons of shared history that’s the only time the Stros have won 90+ when the Coogs have won 9+.
My fears going into the season have come to reality lately I thought the offense would be an issue and now its putting a strain on the pitching because they have to pitch a shutout to even give us a chance to win.
No way the pitching lost the game. Four shutouts in five games is a taletell sign that something is wrong with this team offensively. Yes, pitching has sucked for three of the four shutouts, but it wasn’t the pitching’s fault to lose a 1-0 game.
The team can thank their lucky stars that a once hot Mariners team has lost 4 in a row. Crane should be giving Brown some heat for not bringing up Ullola.
What’s the worst that could happen…that he’ll experience a bad outing?
Nothing displaces my Astros. Not the Coogs. Not my son’s soccer team. Not my wife’s birthday. Its Astros or bust. But I understand the inter-relation between the two entities.
I may be in assisted living one day with no family or friends to come call on me. But I expect to hear, “Mr Funkmaster, the Astros are here to see you.”
Another interesting note….Alonzo Tredwell, a 2nd round pick out of UCLA a couple of years ago pitched for the Hooks yesterday….4 shutout innings with 10 k’s.
In 2024 he had some injuries and is healthy this year……has run through 3 levels this year and is off to a good start at CC….big kid who knows how to pitch….one to keep an eye on.
