Blanco pitched 7 innings, so he only needed 6 more outs. I would have left him in the game and if he gave up a hit, then pull him.
agree coog91. Been by far our most consistent SP this year. Couple posters on here said as recently as last week, that he needed to go. The man is getting better & better w ea Start n the biggie is he has cut down on giving up the HR.
Edit: No-Hitter does nothing at this point in time for this Team. They desperately need to win 8/9 of 10 or go 12-3 to try get bk in contention. Seattle playing very well.
I have zero issue with them taking Blanco out for all the reasons yalllve already mentioned. I might’ve had a small quibble about using Pressly for the 8th but honestly it doesn’t matter because Hader was worse in the 9th. Losing a no-hitter late is always disappointing but this one is especially frustrating to me because it’s another reminder of why this team isn’t going anywhere this year. We can simply can’t rely on our pen. If Abreu, Pressly, and Hader were having the seasons they had last year this would still very much look like a playoff team. Even in spite of all the injuries to the SP. They’d probably even still have an outside shot at another pennant. Instead we’re 6 under and even with the win today there’s just not much to inspire confidence. I think when you factor in the amount invested in the BP, this might be the worst/most disappointing BP in franchise history.
This was exactly the game you let Pressly ruin it for you. No serious threat to lose the game. I would have loved to see Blanco go one or two more batters, though, just to see.
Oh, and you knew Pressly was gonna give that up. I knew Pressly was gonna give that up. And yes, my corgi knew it. Poor guy spit his bone out and walked in the kitchen waiting for five ounces of Jim Beam to be poured in his dog dish.
The Nose knows.
Good post WhoweTalkin.
Good win. Nice series win. Sweep the Chisox.
In the postgame interview, Blanco commented that he knew he had thrown a lot of pitches and accepted being taken out of the game.
If he had fought harder to stay in the game, then the club should have left him in because as it turned out Pressly and Hader gave up 3 hits.
A chance at a second no hitter is rare, and quite frankly, the Astros aren’t going to catch Seattle.
As soon as they took Blanco out, I stopped caring about the no hitter. I’m just glad that they won. It’s all that matters at this point. Get back to .500.
I understand both sides of it Goose.
However, I lean to the same side as you.
Two no hitters and a second coming after the suspension would have been a feather in his cap.
I think it was Funk that said letting him go out for the 8th wasn’t gonna hurt any thing….at that point if he gives up a hit or walks a couple of guys then pull him.
And I don’t see the boys catching the Mariners or the Wild Card Card spot….its not impossible but unlikely.
He’s a 30-year-old major leaguer, not a college or high school kid. I don’t think his arm will fall off when his pitch count reaches 100. Not too many guys get a chance to throw two no hitters in one season.
At the same time, I can understand them being cautious when three starting pitchers are currently out due to injury. (Not including Garcia and McCullers)
The bottom line….he didn’t fight for it. Ryan and Verlander probably would have fought for the chance to pitch for another no hitter.
I would have allowed him to continue to pitch until he gave up a hit, but he didn’t fight for the right to try.
Interesting tidbit….Whitcomb played his first game in the OF for Sugarland.
Just stats this year are impressive.
BA- .306. OPS- .957. HR- 15 RBI- 59
Last year he hit 35 HR’s and had 102 RBI but only hit .240 and struck out a lot.
He has cut down on the k’s and as such the hit tool is really coming around.
Idk with the way our lucks been going this year it might’ve lol
The white Sox will send out Crochet on Tuesday so that’ll be a tough matchup. But otherwise no reason not to lose this series.
Unless his arm was getting tired or sore there was absolutely no excuse to pull the young man.
Another move that makes one shake their head about this staff.
If the Astros were to trade for a pitcher this would be the guy….
It would take too much though….he is really good.
FYI- Bloss was the starting pitcher last night for the Hooks….
He threw the first 6 and 1/3 of a no- hitter here in San Antonio……
Stats on the year.
IP- 62 (17+ in high A and the other 44+ in AA)
K- 60
ERA- 1.74 total, 2.08 in A+ and 1.61 in AA)
H- 30
BAA- .186 in A+ and .127 in AA
Yes those numbers are absolutely dominant and yes, you are seeing it correctly, he got even better since moving up to AA.
A .127 BA against is nuts.
He sits mid 90’s and will get to upper 90’s when he needs a big K.
Bring him up and let’s see what he can do.
