Houston city leaders looking to demolish 'dilapidated buildings' ahead of World Cup

How about the Astrodome. That thing needs to go.

I know a few more also but if there are vagrants living in those places now you’ll have to deal with moving them out

thats a good thing about houston, it will knock down old crap, cities up north not good at that.

Maybe they can finish off the Scott St area lol

The article stated that because the buildings aren’t dangerous, the city cannot force the owners to demolish them. One would think that we could have an ordinance that imposes a time limit, say 2 years(?), to either begin rehab or tear it down. And make the law impervious to owners just passing the buildings to shell companies to avoid the time limit.

While I understand the sentiment and agree somewhat, I really don’t want the
city to become the ultimate HOA of all time. Two years is not really a long time
to do engineering structural studies, develop plans, obtain financing, get necessar permits, deal with market fluctuations, or other things that come up in life. Maybe probation at 2 years , 2nd warning at 4 years , and possible legal action at 2 years
after that. Of course you neuter the ordinance enough and it effectively becomes
meaningless.

Dilapidated buildings? Have the city have some architectural standards instead. We’re a city of ugly buildings, some abandoned building aren’t going to make a difference.

I’d volunteer to sit on the city ministry of ugly buildings for review.
