Soccer isn’t huge for me, but I’ve been to four Dynamo games, two at Robertson and two at the new stadium.
I always cheer for Team USA in the World Cup.
The ultimate game would be a Team USA World Cup game in Houston. Sure hope it happens!

In 1998 I went on a High School trip to England and France. Just happened to be when France was hosting the World Cup. Pretty cool atmosphere, but we didn’t attend any matches.
It is going to be 16 groups of 3, not 12 groups of 4. They announced that a while back. Also Spurs are shite. COYG!

This mirrors my journey to becoming a big soccer fan. I always watched the world cup but that was about it, until the Donovan goal in the 2010 World Cup. After that I started following much closer, especially the US National team, like you I follow guys with any sort of connection to the national team.
2 things I have really come to love about soccer. 1st, it is 2 hours and you are done with no commercial breaks except halftime. the 2 hour thing is great with NCAA basketball too.
2nd, real competitions to watch Saturday and Sunday mornings. In the fall, when UH is on the road or off, nothing beats Premier league at 7AM, NCAA Football starting at 11 and going thru midnight.
I ran a betting pool for the Euros last year, several folks here were on it. I will make sure to post the one i run for the WC this fall when we get closer.

16 groups of 3…. Will the play cross group to still get three games? Or just two in the opening round?

If the Spurs are shite then the big bad Gunners must be the largest group of Barmy Arseholes in one place at any given time…. Common Hill, how many years do we need to go back to find the last time the Spurs did NOT finish ahead of the Gunners? 8 or 9 years?!
16 groups of 3. 2 group stage matches. Top 2 advance to knock out round. Knock out round expands from 16 to 32 teams.

feel truly blessed as a MexicanAmerican, best believe we will be doing a whole lot more traveling that summer!!! 2 teams to root for and great cities to visit!!! Vamos Coogs!!! damn, we need a men’s futbol team, Houston has so much futbol talent!

Because NRG is not a FIFA sponsor, the stadium will not be called NRG on any of the broadcasts or in any of the promotions. Since NRG has no reach beyond the local markets, doubt they’ll do anything about that.
I posted this on the thread, but there are better newer stadiums available to FIFA in the US. They chose Houston because of the city, not the stadium. Everyone has a good time in Houston for the Super Bowls and NCAA tourney. Word gets around. We’re a great city!

This is a great springboard for the olympic committee as well to see how we do as a host city

Agreed. Studies have shown all the host cities do is spend money on unused facilities. Smart move would be have the Olympics rotate between a handful of places, like the Super Bowl.
Would never have to worry about that…… they’ve already said it’s too hot for a summer games….
Does anyone remember when Houston was serious about getting the Olympics?
I remember one of the crazy ideas…… they were going to cut the top off the dome and turn it into open air stadium for track and field.
At least I think I remember that being bandied about.
Gonna have to disagree. If Houston hosted an Olympics, then much like in Atlanta, they’ll probably build a bunch of dorms for it at UH the same way they did for Georgia State.
A very easy way to increase our residential campus life at someone else’s expense!!!

I do. It was 1986. We went to track and field at Robertson, cycling at the Alkek Velodrome,ice hockey at the Sam Houston Coliseum, and volleyball at the Spring Branch Coliseum. It was a blast.
I went to see some of the events. GREAT time!
As someone who works in the events industry, I can confidently say Houston was chosen because of their ability to pull off high profile sporting events.
The city, people, facilities, food, culture & women (yes this is true lol) are big reasons why people love traveling and hosting events in Houston.
They have a big party scene, and have the infrastructure to pull it off almost better than anyone else in the country.
Plus, see the success of Premier League & La Liga Exhibition Games in Houston (Manchester United, Manchester City) as well as the Gold Cup. Houston is the spot to host a sporting event
