Houston’s contract for Major Applewhite shows the Cougars are tired of losing coaches
Things get silly when there is less real football about which to talk, so now there is discussion about the fairness of a contract for a first time head coach. It’s sort of insulting the ability of Applewhite to manage his affairs. Old Hair Club for Men Breath is doing a hit piece (things like this will not be forgotten) on UH. Tom probably had a hand in this. They probably share a bottle of Minoxidil.
If Major does well, his compensation will increase before the life of the contract runs.
This is why Lincoln Riley ran fast the other way when interviewing got underway. He wanted to used UH as a stepping stone.
I’m happy with CMA. So far, he’s shown he can recruit; hopeful he can coach.
The football scoop guy is close to agents which is where he gets his scoops. The video he made is to try to curry even more favor with those agents so that he can get more “scoops.”
He (incorrectly) thought that UH’s fan base was too small to matter, but UH fans hit him pretty hard. He admitted surprise at the amount of our fans later in the day.
Oops, turns out we’re not Northern Illinois or Western Michigan!
I followed the twitter conversation and it was ludicrous. This guy is acting like we held a gun to CMA’s head and made him take this deal. He also seems to think it would be CMA who would have to pay for the buyout out of his own pocket. What rock does this guy live under? A school that gets hosed by coaches leaving every 2-4 years FINALLY is able to secure a favorable buyout provision and now we’re taking advantage of some poor little guy who is only making $1.5 million/year? C’mon man!
CMA had other offers he could have taken. What will be telling will be in two years if he does well. We will offer him a new contract with a similar buyout. Three things could happen, and it would tell us where Major’s head is at when it is time.
- He takes the new contract with the same structured buyout. We know he is truly committed.
- He signs a new contract for a higher amount of salary, but he forces the buyout structure to be altered where it is easier for him to leave. It says I am staying at Houston, but I am doing well enough that I want my options to be open. Houston could just say no at that point, which leads to option 3.
- He continues under the same contract sacrificing a higher salary that permits him to have a lower buyout. He isn’t committed, but biding his time to move to another program.
…or he could be terrible and we are on the hook equally for his salary. However, in all honesty, I thought CMA was ready to take the step to HC more so than any other coordinator candidate. I think he will be successful.
If Applewhite is successful the ball will be back in his court…IMO the only thing this assures is that MA hangs around two or three years…that is, if he is winning. If Applewhite does get fired he will get a big chunk of dough regardless…let’s just hope he wins and wins big…
