Houston, we have a recruiting problem
After Tom Herman’s departure from the program, six players from the 2017 class have de-committed | The Daily Cougar

I guess you haven’t been keeping up with the message threads here…

Two were academic casualties correct?

No we don’t have a problem. At least not based on the limited information we have right now.

It’s a student paper. They’re learning. In this case learning how to write critically.

What crap. Worn out cliche combined with gross over reaction. “Crisis”? What happened to Baylor recruiting is a crisis. What happened to Western Michigan is a boarderline crisis. This is a walk in the park and basically SOP when a coach is hired away.

Yes

Typical sophomoric Daily Cougar story. Few if any recruits read this stuff although sometimes recruiters from other schools will use it to unhinge a possible recruit. But if we lose anyone over this silly story then he wasn’t a strong commit anyway.

It looks like to me that we need to get rid of a lot of folks at the dailycougar.com. They should be promoting UH, not trying to destroy it.

While this article is disappointing, there’s nothing “we” need to do about it. Believe it or not, it’s not the job of journalists or student journalists to be cheerleaders for the university. I worked there several years ago and was eventually a sports editor. While I chose to take a more positive route most of the time, that doesn’t mean every article needs to be a public relations fluff piece. I don’t think this article is “trying to destroy” UH – it’s just a student’s poorly-researched opinion and that’s OK.

While the article is disappointing, college newspapers play an important role on campuses. The purpose of them is for students to make mistakes. The Cougar has made a lot of them as of late, and I would like to see them do their due diligence, but there’s a reason it’s an amateur newspaper. They shouldn’t be held to the same standards as professionals.

Most importantly though, anything relating to the “Houston, we have a…” cliche is garbage. This young writer will learn that soon enough, hopefully.

Good perspective!!

The Daily Cougar, training the blog writers of the future. Using the “Houston we have a problem” quote is very original. No one has ever used it like that before. Do blog writers understand sarcasm?

They certainly aren’t factual…What was actually said was - “Houston, We’ve Had a Problem”…Hollywood changed it, so it must be true.
