How the NBA made Kelvin Sampson a better coach

“I didn’t know what I didn’t know,” Sampson said. “The first month in San Antonio I was watching (assistant coaches) do scouting reports on the multiple ways you can guard pick and rolls. Most coaches know spacing but they don’t know relocation and spacing. That’s the kind of stuff I learned. I wasn’t very good at that stuff.”

Sampson knew how to win. After coaching in the NBA, he now knows how to win in multiple ways. As the top assistant with the Rockets, he would assign himself the scouting reports on the coaches he wanted to watch the closest.
