So what?
Our alums share a common bond. This is where the work starts and it has to stat now. For far too long the alums office has done very little. Proof is in the numbers. With 10k’s of U of H alums in the greater Houston are it is inexcusable that the alum’s office has not done more than it has.
Numbers do not lie. Our alum’s office has to look in the mirror and truly find creative ideas. No more excuses.
That needs to change. It’s the old ways that keep us down.
We need to recreate UH as more of a traditional, residential “go off to college” type school if we are going to move up.
I can’t really see how to achieve that without such a mandate.

92010, thanks for including this topic as a suggested question for Pezman in the other thread. Prompted me to cover over here to read up on it, interesting discussion. I guess I’m a 180 degrees from where you’re at with the discounts. Just a different perspective from the west coast. For me, it’s all about quality of education and university ranking 1st and foremost. We continue to focus on raising our reputation on this front like Renu has done, more of our kids will follow our footsteps in coming to UH.
Discounts had zero influence on our decision for both kids when it came to college, it was all about going to the best academic school that was a good fit for them as an individuals. The other question would be, as funding for public universities have shrunk over the years, can UH even afford to do something like this? We’ve had to claw for every penny, and just this year finally got the additional Excellence Funding approved for us & Tech (and some others). Though a game changer for us, still just a fraction of what UT/A&M have access to. So I’m not sure we can afford to fund discounts at a level that would translate to a difference in athletics attendance.
Again just my perspective here.

I love the idea of having alums directly involved with a “carrot” to get other alums, fans, family members going to games.
Having a point system to generate an extra incentive is in my view a plus for everybody. Emboldening alums can only be positive.
This has to be discussed. These alums by definition when to U of H. They are by definition an existing customer. He/she has to be treated as such.
These same alums again by definition are more likely to tell their offspring to choose U of H over other schools and going/attending games.
Fact is we still have a dismal TDECU attendance. This has to change. This is why I brought this up. Thank you again for visiting.

The irony is that there is now a movement gaining steam to stop legacy admits. I personally think it is stupid. These people want to the turn the U.S. into one of those Asian countries where only a few can get into college and the rest are doomed to toil in a menial existence.
In either case, as universities become harder and harder to get into, whether due to grades or money, there will be fewer fans of college sports and therefore less TV money. At that point, college sports is probably dead.
Who said anything about race?
Students in my suburb are very racially diverse.
We should recruit all of them.

Found out a little more on UHAAF funding of scholarships. In 2022 there were 208 individuals
awarded with combined total of $ 202,513. That’s a little less than $1000 average for a scholarship . Nice amount, but would that entice a potential legacy kid to seek out UH ?

Again, in 2023 UHAAF spent only $24,000 on scholarships. Why so low ?
I’d like to see UHAAF award $1,000,000 annually to legacy scholarships and get the action
mentioned in the Houston and Texas papers.

UT has tons of suburban Middle / Upper middle class kids, of ALL races, ethnicities …we need to mirror what they are doing.

How many of you all live inside the loop? Or better yet the beltway? We all know the mentality of folks living out there the further away from Houston even though they probably make their living in Houston
the problem is UH is moving in one direction and HISD in another as HISD is not producing the same type of student who may want to attend UH now or college to begin with - I use that because a lot of schools nearby that can set the tone if they bought in
Hmmm…another idea in there. How can we participate in or beef up UH presence on
college day at the local districts ? I mean put on a first rate dog and pony show that
blows the other school’s presentations away.
The word “traditional” is the operative word. We all know what that means.
Not only should they be mentioned in the papers but also they should be recognized at games. This calls for sponsorship all around.
Make it an incentive, make it public and loud so everyone can see how it benefits the entire greater Houston area and U of H. The more U of H is publicly spoken the more “roots” it creates.
