We kept up with #15 Oklahoma, at their house! That’s damn well impressive.
Willie cleaned up the defense after a disappointing season opener against UNLV. We got work to do on offense, and we have 10 games left on our schedule.
Actually our D had a good game against UNLV. I think 10 points were on the offense with the pick 6 and giving UNLV the ball in our territory for an easy FG. The D gave up 17 with the O putting them behind the 8 ball all night. UNLV put up 72 today. We will get a better gage when they play KU next weekend.
There is no way that the O performed as well as the D. Minimal runnng game. Minimal time to pass. Below average OC plays. Too many E/W O plays and not enough N/S plays.
Couple that with poor ST play, the Coogs left too much money at the performance table.
That said, the game came down to at least two mistakes: the muffed punt return catch and the Safety.
Against good opponents, sometimes the difference between W & L are the mistakes and our mistakes proved critical.
It was a huge improvement from week one. The offense obviously needs to improve a lot, but the team showed great fight. We don’t have any easy wins on the schedule this year, but if we can hang close in Norman we should be in some dogfights; just hope we win a few of them.
I’m not ready to fire anyone. New coaching staff, new schemes, new players. It takes time. UH is not a school that signs 4 and 5 star players that can come in immediately and start. UH’s approach is to develop three stars to be the best they can be to compete against 4 and 5 star players. My mantra is “short term pain, long term gain”.
We saw enough against Oklahoma to see the UH players bust their tail to win. There is much to be hopeful for.
