Oh, so the NFL objected and we told them to pound sand and wore them anyway? Now I really love 'em.
I donāt think thereās any legal liability for wearing the jerseys, only if they started selling them. From reading Duarteās article it looks like they wanted to unveil them before Rice did their jersey tribute which couldāve been similar and they didnāt want to wait to get clearance from UH merchandising. Pezman went to Khator to get approval to wear the jerseys.
I think the NFL objections were very late in the game, merchandise was not really even considered at that point.
Have we (UH) trademarked Luv ya Coogs!
If we havenātā¦we need to do it ASAP
Could be our motto for the Big 12 version of the Houston Cougars
Ahhh, well I believe Duarteās source. Also that reads a bit different than it was presented at first, a little less dramatic.
RE/MAX used to sue any other real estate company that used the red over white over blue color scheme.
There are definitely some ways a similar scheme could be used. I do think they looked nice, and I am not an old Oilers fan. Of course I also liked UCLA when I was young.
They could probably have a baby blue, but switch up other aspects such as mixing it with a red to have a portion pay homage while having it as a new overall look.
Go to 6:50 for the discussion between the Cal and Hannah McNair and the hosts. (Hannah is definitely the personality in that relationship.) They talk about the Titans/NFL/Amy Adams-Strunk having a hand in it around the 7:30 mark.

Ehh thatās still just a bunch of hearsay. They claim Adams owns all the ālikenesses of [H-Town/Columbia] blueā. I would like to see some paperwork on that and if so, it seems that owning all likenesses of a color is ridiculously way too wide of a trademark and should absolutely be challenged.
So they think they own the old blue police cars because of what color they were and uniform the cops wore?
Very well may be true, but the McNairs add a bit of cogency to the matter.
Knowing how pedantic the Adams family is, they most definitely attempted to intervene. The one thing more important to them than Tennesseeās success, is their sense of patriarchy and lordship of those colors from our city.
I would think different industries would have different thresholds for confusion. Football vs law enforcement is less likely to generate confusion than football vs football
Nike makes our uniforms. I would think theyād have checked to make sure what we wore wouldnāt get us taken to court.
As for Luv Ya Coogsā¦tell them to stick it in their pipe and smoke it!
But even then we have Iowa vs Southern Miss to refer back to. The simple fact that our own trademarked logos are on the jerseys and would be on any merch nullifies any argument they would have about āconfusionā.
Remember we couldnāt do āSack Aveā because of 'Saks 5th Ave"
Why would anyone confuse the two but still legal said it could cause a lawsuit
UH could promote this as disregarding the NFL and becoming a Steve Austin-like anti-establishment heel, but baby face to college football fans.
When Cal is the most normal owner in the Division. We have The most bitter and pity owner, one who cares more about whales than his own team, and one whose son is getting in fights with his pro wrestlers.
Every person on this board, in the City of Houston, State of Texas ,and the rest of the nation recognized the uniforms as Oilers minus the oil derrick on the helmet.
Thatās not what I mean. I mean if you were going to buy merch would you be confused thinking it was Oilers merch.
I can totally understand why the Adams family would feel like there would be confusion between the two football teams, since UH was the better team during most of the oilers stent in H-town . . . . .
