I heard a rumor

True story: In Bethlehem, just a short walk from the Church of the Nativity, there’s a coffee shop called Stars and Bucks. It features a green sign with a mermaid-type creature. I’ve seen it twice, and both times wondered if Starbucks just figures, “It ain’t worth the bad publicity to go after a little Arab coffee shop in the West Bank.”

Love that our unis triggered some Titan fanboys.

Yesterday on 365, John McClain said, when asked about the uniforms, that he loved them and they got the school a lot of attention. He also said the school asked the NFL about using the uniforms and the NFL said no but the school did it anyway. Said the NFL owns the trademark to ‘Columbia Blue’ and the blue UH used is not that shade. While the school isn’t using the same blue, he said it was probably why the school did not sell merchandise for the game.

I am paraphrasing what I heard and keep in mind that McClain is close to the Adam’s and basically their mouthpiece.

UH focused on the Houston connection to the colors…it is prominent on the city flag and city vehicles etc.

Amy Adams Strunk has been just as petty as her father about the Oilers and Houston. Let’s see how selling UH merchandise with this color scheme plays out

I have seen it in Bethlehem as well! Very startling thing to see in Palestinian West Bank zone.

The nfl does not give a blip about their fans. I blame the City of Houston for not doing more when the Oilers relocated to Tennessee. Same can be said for the City of San Diego, Cleveland put the pressure on the Browns owner resulting on the Ravens name. Not only did they rename they franchise but they also changed their colors.
Columbia Blue belongs in Houston.
Powder blue belongs in San Diego.
Why did the NFL gain from these three franchises (Colts too) keep their names and colors? Nothing but upsetting Baltimore (Colts), Houston and San Diego fans.

Amy thought it was fine. The league office, they are very protective.

I prefer the Texans colors to the Oilers. I don’t mind not having the Oilers name anymore either. That name has negative connotations for multiple reasons.

UH using the Luv Ya Blue colors was a “one-time” cool idea that caught everyone by surprise and recaptured a 2-year apex of the Oiler franchise. That’s it. Time to move on…no UH merchandise in those colors is appropriate.

It’s definitely not going to be a one time thing. Players and fans loved it too much

I would buy a Nike polo or Columbia fishing shirt with that script in those colors, but that has more to do with a lack of options in quality polos and fishing shirts.

I wonder why? Is our fan base that old?

Is there some pop culture thing with the Houston Oilers that I’m not aware of? Popular in hip hop?

It’s a great logo. No other team had anything like it.

Let’s see if we can make this even more ridiculous. What if we partner with Columbia University, where the color came from originally, and tell the NFL, if you don’t sue us, they won’t sue you. Then split the merch profits with the Ivy Leaguers.

Houston Oilers merchandise has become popular again. They have t-shirts, hats, cups, etc at Academy.

Mostly, it’s just that the branding was really, really good. Same reason people still wear Astros Tequila Sunrise jerseys, even though the team only wore them for like a decade almost 40 years ago, and actually wore both the shoulder stripe uniform and the brick red set for longer.

I still prefer my Colt .45s T-shirt and cap. That’s what I wear to every Astros game I attend. You know…the nickname that the FANS chose!

Colt 45s logo. Best sports logo of all time. And no one is close.

Couldn’t get away with it these days.

My standard has always been if you see it, is your first thought “Oh! it’s X” then X can make an argument about trademark infringement. If you see Houston is playing and you see the Columbia Blue jerseys and the first thing you think of is the Houston Oilers, then I think they have an argument. Of course, I’m not a lawyer., I only watch them argue on Coogfans.

Sometimes, an amicable arrangement can be made. The Packers worked out an arrangement with the University of Georgia for the G on their helmets. The NCAA worked out an arrangement with the Illinois High School Association to use March Madness for the NCAA Basketball tournament. So if you have two reasonable parties, accommodations can be made.

Yes and yes. And it’s not just hip-hop where it’s popular.

It’s a Houston thang.

I don’t want to overthink it, but it’s sort of a middle finger back at Bud Adams and the Titans. It’s the HOUSTON Oilers, not the Nashville Oilers. That was our team. The one that left isn’t our team, you don’t see people wearing Titans gear around town.

(Of course if it’s a middle finger, it’s misguided, since the Adams family still owns the logo and gets $$$ for it). All the more reason to sell the UH “Luv Ya Houston” gear, since the Adams won’t get that money!

This will sound dumb but watching on tv and seeing those pops of baby blue in the stands looked quite sharp. The fact that hundreds of people spent time and money in less than 48 hours to try and match the jerseys says a ton.

I love red and white for UH but we’ve had decades of trying out dark blue, regular blue, black, and versions of gray/silver as an accent and they’re all Ho-hum to me.

But this one just worked. Looked good. National story. Media craze. And vast majority of fans loved it. It can’t be a one off.
