These guys know how to play football, they are even very good, I took the better as they are not complete players. They are undisciplined making costly penalties that are costing us the game. Disciple them you say! It is like getting sailors not to cuss.
Last year Dana said we need to bring in better Wide Outs. He said Herslow kept coming to him saying “i am already here”. He was the first guy in and the last guy out everyday, made it to every extra throw around with Tune. Worked his way up to starting position and won the bowl game.
This is an issue where CDH’s brutal honesty needs a little diplomacy. CDH has bonded with most of the players, so I am not as concerned with them, but if I’m a recruit, I am thinking I am busting my tail everyday for this guy and he tells the media this?
Don’t be surprised if opposing coaches use that statement against us. “CDH doesn’t appreciate is players.”
One of the things I did like about Herman was he made everything into a competition and clearly defined who won and lost. Players knew if they weren’t good enough and had two choices, work harder or quit. Now it did lead to some issues like one star player breaking the jaw of another but for the most part helped drive competition.
West Virginia alum- not here to flame anybody.
It was part of Holgs that got really old after 5 years- I can almost recite the “It’s the Big 12, I knew it was going to be like this” speech he gave after every loss. Including an unforgiveable 31-19 loss to Kansas in 2013 that ended KU’s 27 game conference losing streak and was KU’s only conference win of the year.
We got the lines about how we needed to recruit better, be more disciplined, iron out the problems- and it’s always delivered like a guy writing a sports column with no real ties to the program instead of from THE guy in charge.
At first it was that he needed “his players”, then it’s that the players he brought aren’t good enough, and finally you’re told that’s just how it is. He’s out the door the next year for cash somewhere else.
But Dana’s never been strong with media presentations.
OTOH, I think the players that interact with Dana and the other coaches on a daily basis know what he meant. I think the D’Anthony Jones piece is a good example. They know they need to do things better, and I believe that’s what Dana was saying–we need our players to be better players during games.
