Reports at the time were that he & his staff tried…but other programs offered bigger checks, so that answers that
One of the main reasons that Coach Yeoman went with The Veer was OL problems.
In the 1960’s we played SEC, Penn St., A&M, Fla St. et al and could not block their DL’s. We had a large talent gap.
So Yeoman quit blocking the DL. He “optioned” them. Our OT fired out and blocked LB’s instead of DT’s. The QB read the play and handed off, kept it,or pitched it to a RB.
By 1967 we lead the Nation in Rushing Offense and Total Offense.
We are there again.because we are in The Big 12, not The AAC nor CUSA. Our recruiting has yet to catch up. Fritz has only one class. Dana recruited Nada.
Temporarily we need a “gimmick” Offense so our OL does not have to sustain blocks. The “Hurry Up” might work.
A running QB also would help. Like a Track Star. Like Carlisle.
He’s not the problem but our scheme isn’t great either and we could use tempo better.
Go see what Dana left Willie on the OL and you can start to realize the root of the problem.
With all this said, you have to wonder why Frtiz keeps insisting on his “Willie Ball” offensive philosophy of being a between the tackles ball control run oriented offense? Look what that got us last year, dead last in the nation in lots of offensive categories.
Willie needs to step it up.
We lack Big 12 talent. Look at Utah, Arizona, and Az St. They came over from The PAC 12. They already were in a Power Conference. We came from The AAC.
In Texas we recruit vs The Big 12, SEC, and The ACC. Power 4 conferences. Pretty tough.
Our Offense needs a “gimmick”. It needs today’s version of The Veer, Run-N-Shoot, or whatever.
Is he just a one trick pony? He’s had success, but not at the P4 level.
lol, last year was the least talented offense UH has had since 1998. A quicker tempo would have just put the defense on the field more.
UH won’t out-talent very many Big 12 teams this year, so winning at the margins is still the best way to pick up wins and build a program.
Ryan, when do you see the offense finally getting to an acceptable talent level? Next year, or the year after?
Our alums need to step it up.
We lack Big 12 NIL. Look at Texas Tech. They have multimillionaire donors.
Tx Tech had 38 minutes of ball possession.
Winning at the edges won’t exactly solve that.
What will is sustained drives. And we cannot effectively block vs top talent.
Willie ball just gave you 22 minutes of possession time vs top talent.
There are future opponents who have good defensive talent. Not at Tech’s level, but good.
In 54 minutes vs Oregon St and 60 minutes vs Tech we scored 21 points.
We don’t have the NIL bucks to buy a team like TT has. We need to recruit well and develop the talent, much like Kelvin Sampson did in his first few years. CWF has basically had one real recruiting season, plus what he could get from leftovers from the 2023 class when he got here.
Fritz has done well in recruiting HS talent, but they are mostly freshmen or redshirt freshmen. The players he could afford from the NIL have not been the type that TT, Bama, ND, Ohio State, etc. could afford, but they were a step up in many cases from what we had in 2024 – especially on the OL. But the big boys know the importance of the OL and DL and spend accordingly.
I think we will improve each year, but until the current redshirt freshmen become RS soph and juniors our guys will usually not match up with the high price spread. However, I do think CWF will get the most out of every player and will make us proud.
The one thing that makes me hope for an even faster than generally expected rise is the quality of the recruits CWF brought in last year and is on track to sign this year; that, and the fact that Fritz has done more with less everywhere he has coached.
.
Acceptable? Next year. Contending? The year after. More than anything, they’ve got to hit on some OL that can stay and be solid for more than one year.
Well, this is his first P4 team he has coached. We shall see.
and WR’s that can get open quickly. HCWF mentioned it during his presser. We can expect any QB to stay “alive” if our WR’s are running wrong routes or offer an alternative. Multiple pieces have to work together to make a winning offense. We have got to go back to basics. Tanner with two catches is not a coincidence. That also goes for our pass protection. We have got to do the little details better. OSU is a perfect opportunity to make these improvements/adjustments.
Tech’s dline is stout. One DE is expected to be an early 1st round, the other, early 2nd round. One tackle was 2nd team all Big 12,
Our transfer right tackle wasn’t a full time starter at Tech last season and based on watching him play, I understand why.
Look, we were outclassed by Tech. They had better players. No amount of coaching up is going to overcome that. It’s Jimmies and Joes, not X’s and O’s
But after 3 years while he may not be the problem he certainly hasn’t been an answer. Remember all those games before Tech.
Whatever happened to Demetrius Dean? I know he’s a freshman, but I don’t even see him in the depth chart. You would think a 4-star OT can at least be a backup his freshman year.
A post like that seems like it took little to zero research as to why.
He is a freshman and is on the roster.
Our OL coach has a track record of success. He hasn’t had the hosses to succeed since he moved to UH. Give him the players and then, if they under perform, an evaluation will be due.
