A college football super conference is guaranteed to fail for the numerous reasons I state above. I don’t see it happening. What is undeniable though is that the top blue bloods are going to BIG and SEC. They will call their shot eventually but it will be for more guaranteed playoff spots after going to an NFL style pod system for more intrigue ($). ACC will need to get raided first. This is probably a 5-10 year out thing because of that ACC GOR. If that ACC dam breaks sooner than the late ‘20s/early 30’s we may end up where I predict sooner. You heard it here first.
- Collect underpants
- Implement FCS-style playoff
- Profit
I wouldn’t rule out a 4th P-conference IF the ACC could somehow find a way to accommodate ND’s schedule/compensation as a full time member. ND is as big a brand as any B1G or SEC school and would also enjoy an easier path to the playoffs. ACC’s GOR could almost guarantee that there would be no defections so long as there is a $120M exit fee. Interesting times.
mHver isn’t reliable, but he’s reporting that the “yes” votes for Califord to the ACC aren’t there, and that a fallback plan is to add 4-6 AAC schools plus Aresco to the PAC while firing Kliavkoff.
Per the Athletic, 5+7 is basically on the table but until ACC expansion is settled, discussions can’t progress.
PS: Poor Kliavkoff lol
The multi-million dollar question is how few teams can they get before they start to lose all the college football fans and become a minor league NFL. Once they figure that, then we can narrow down the end format.
Let me add another point:
Johnson and Johnson is headquartered in New Brunswick. It is literally on the campus of Rutgers.
They give a lot of money to the school. Imagine a scenario where, as I predict, a new upper tier of “college” football breaks away from universities and self funds. What better source of revenue than a company that makes sterile bandages, gauze, and athletic tape? Its a match made on Madison Avenue.
There might come a day where Alabama makes more than Vandy and Ohio State makes more than Rutgers but I doubt anyone is being kicked out/relegated/demoted.
That pretty much closes the door on ACC expansion.
Didn’t the aggies throw a public fit and then was told by SEC to sit down?
They only need to flip 1 of 4 no votes. Could be UNC is pressuring NCSt here or they know there are enough votes so going public. It would be interesting when the vote happens whether it’s unanimous.
North Carolina will 100% have a landing spot in a P2…North Carolina State will not.
Their best hope is being one of the four additions to the Big 12 but we can be extremely picky with which 4 we add
UNC and NC State share a board of regents.
Given that, as I said, it’s not looking good for Califord and SMU.
Now this is crazy realignment
WOW!!!
I wonder which school “flipped?”
I’m guessing NC State. If so, then I am sure their Board must be pissed.
And if it’s Clemson……then if I were FSU, I’d be mapping out my exit strategy.
As for SMU, enjoy the travel and playing for free!
ESPN is now reporting that SMU will get NO TV money….for NINE years!!!
Poor ponies.
smu is like one of those people dangling off the bottom of the last copter out of Saigon
SMU is the guy that hitched a ride on the plane landing gear on the last US flight out of Kabul.
Genius …if you think about it.
They only have to raise the $8 million they would have gotten in the AAC minus any additional income earned in the ACC and they they benefit by being in a P4 with increased exposure, better recruits and far better football/basketball matchups…and then they receive a full share when their free term expires.
This is an investment with a high ROI!
No brainer…I’m just shocked UCONN, Memphis, or USF didin’t try to do the same
