Hofheinz may have been the house that Big E built - some students even wanted the new arena to be named the Elvin Hayes Field House after the former UH star, who left the school as its all-time leading scorer and rebounder the year before the arena opened - but Otis Birdsong put the place in my heart.
Birdsong was so cold that there was a time I thought Hofheinz was bigger and better than Madison Square Garden.
