When it’s all said and done, where will he rank on your all time list of Cougar basketball greats?
He’s way up there as far as his impact on the program/team. Maybe not quite at Galen’s level, but pretty close.
He will be right up there. But we have had so many guys with great records and I don’t even try to rank them. How will you compare them, by position, by overall performance, by points, or what. We have had guys like The Big E, Clyde, Hakeem, Birdsong, etc. and many more before my time and during my time I can’t recall.
So far, I would put him under the CKS term up there with Rob Gray, Grimes, and Sasser in the guard category. But each kid played under different circumstances. For example, the team Gray had around him was not nearly as well stocked as what Shead has had.
Should be be named Consensus All American, he will be up there with the best Cougars ever. IMO the best guard ever here was Otis Birdsong. But there are lots of others, including Marcus Sasser from last year’s team and that is elite company.
Let’s not forget Gary Phillips, 2 time All American.
Rob Williams? I know he let us down in the Final Four but he was one heck of a shooter.
If he leads us to the school’s first ever chip, #1.
Yeeeeeeessss @MRCoog … YEEEEESSSS!!! ![]()
is he coming back next year…?
edit - Shead is in my top 3 for sure
Shead is top 3. No debate. ![]()
+1 for Otis Birdsong, my all-time favorite Coog. Love me some Jamal Shead. If Shead collects the hardware on Monday, April 8, 2024, then my list will be 1. Otis Birdsong, and 1a. Jamal Shead. 2. Hakeem Olajuwon. 3. Elvin Hayes. 4. Dwight Jones. 4a. Sweet Lou Dunbar. 5. Clyde Drexler.
Shead is a PG and Birdsong was a SG. They each played different positions and were asked to do different things.
You have Olahuwan as your #2 and Hayes as #3 which is your choice. However, The Big E was the greatest player at UH that we have ever had. They didn’t track blocks in those days, if they had he would be way ahead of Akeem. In one game he had 29 blocks according to Guy V.
Hayes was #1 in UH history in:
Total points; 2884
Pts/Game; 31
FG made 2265
Double doubles; 86
Rebounds; 1602 in 86 games by comparison Akeem had 1067 in 100 games.
Rebounds per game; 17.2
What they did in the pros is irrelevant to what they did at UH. I have no idea what either’s pro career stats were but both of them and Clyde were all in the top 50 of all time.
Shead is great but hard to break thru 3 HOF"s. Hakeem, Clyde and Big E is as good a top 3 as any school!
If we win the title he needs to go up on the wall
I think he is the most exciting athlete at UH since Case Keenum. As far as point guards, he might be my number 1.
I love Galen but Shead has already surpassed him.
It’s not even close Mike.
You didn’t jump off the deep end…you jumped into the middle of the ocean.
Short of him being the main reason UH wins a natty, he doesn’t compare to Case at all. I realize Case never even won conference title, let alone a national title but he was a man possessed and left records that may not be touched for decades.
He’s definitely in my top 3. If they win it all, he will be #1.
