Japan builds first aircraft carriers since WWII

Go for 2.

It was the right decision, just perhaps not the right call or execution.

Yep, that’s what I was thinking of. Glad I’m not tasked with building , deploying , or developing defensive capabilities of carrier groups. Don’t think
I could sleep very well at night.

At some point, I fear there will be a successful attack on a modern carrier in somebody’s fleet.
As stated, they project a lot of power, and as such
become a high value target themselves.
I shudder to think what the response will be.

Wasn’t it Sweden that snuck up under our carrier in a battle exercise, undetected. Could have shot a lethal blow.

That occurred in a war game simulation.

China could not attack anyone successfully.

The USA led alliance in The Pacific and Indian Oceans is way too powerful.

India also has a large Air Force and huge Field Artillery capabilities.

India, alone, could tie down Western China leaving their Eastern sector short of manpower and Armaments. The Allies might literally be able to launch a Land invasion of Eastern China. If they shift troops Eastward India successfully invades western China.

Like Japan did 30 years ago China-is about to suffer economic shrinkages and a diminished role in world affairs.

China has 50 container ships sitting in the Pacific off Long Beach from which they are collecting zero dollars. We can make them stay there forever.

Interesting take on things and how a conflict may play out. I don’t ever recall India being much engaged in military matters, other then their arch rival Pakistan, but could well be wrong about that. In your scenario , China does seem rather bottled up.

India and China fought one another in the 1960’s.

India can put as many men in uniform as can China.

They each have forces on each side of The Himalayans.

In short China faces the infamous 2 front War.

The Nazis can tell you how that turns out.

Funny thing is the German military in both wars was so good that they almost won both of those two front wars

To stay on topic though. China has much more to gain by saber rattling and just riding the status quo than they could ever gain by rushing general or even limited war over Taiwan.

Plus if I’m Winnie the Pooh I’m looking across the ocean and just going to let America destroy itself
No reason to ignite some unifying blood fued.

This is pretty accurate.

To Counter China, U.S. Policy toward Taiwan Must Change (msn.com)

China is a desperate country, the underlying demographics and economics insures that it will fall apart. But like Reagan did with the USSR, we stand up to them and check them at every point. The one thing you can count on is that socialism/comunism and centralized control over a people and an economy will eventually fall apart. Like Thatcher said about socialism it will end up on the ash heap of history.

But until then they are dangerous. There is no Chinese version of Gorbachev.

To be fair, India is technically not an ally.

An ally is defined (I learned this working at the US Army Pacific HQ as a South Asia Foreign Area Officer) as a country with which we have a mutual defense agreement.

Under that definition, we have only FIVE treaty allies in the Indo-Pacific: Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, and Australia.

India is considered a security partner, not an ally.

That said, yes, in the event of a war with China, hopefully, India would join the war on our side, interdict supply routes through the Indian Ocean, and possibly even open another front along its border with China.

But I see war between nuclear armed nations such as the USA, China, and India as unlikely under the theory of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).

India and China fought a border war in the early 1960s that China got the better part of.

China fought a bloodbath with Vietnam in the 1970s. That was China’s last war.

This whole thread is basically going to go full Fallout 3

We invaded and defeated Iraq in 2 weeks. That’s our deterrent.

I believe that India would side with us in a China conflict.

And that would be a difference maker.

Knowing all this China will simply Sabre rattle and distract their citizens from internal problems.

India is the world’s largest democracy. As such, they share our interests regarding China.

They certainly share our interests regarding China. They want China henneed in as well. I don’t it’s because of their love of democracy though, like democracy everywhere is on the retreat in India as well under Modi.

I fear it’s going to take a fleet and thousands of American sailors being sent to the bottom to get this country to wake up.

In most respects, China is communist in name only, but is functionally fascist, farther than Hitler or Mussolini ever managed to achieve.

It’s funny in a not funny way that Trump wanted our allies to pay their fair share for defense, and by being unreliable and leaving giant messes, both administrations this year have induced them to do so. Even if the total war never comes, we could end up bankrupting our allies before China, as European social programs are generally possible in part because of their lower need to spend on defense (and we have the opposite situation). That global great depression will hurt, a lot.
