While playing in a 3-on-3 league at work I found out that UNC has a JV team as I was matched up against the guy that used to be “Ryan Elvin” (victory cigar) on UNC… He played two years JV and two years varsity at UNC…
Do we have a JV team?

I think a lot of schools did in the “old” days.
Probably called something different depending on the school……now days only walk ons
We had a freshman team back in the day before freshmen became eligible to play varsity. I think that changed in the early 70s as I remember Otis Birdsong playing varsity as a freshman. The freshmen frequently played in Hofheinz as part of doubleheaders. I seem to remember us playing San Jac a lot.
Someone who hasn’t lost as many brain cells as I have can set me straight or elaborate.
Pulled out an old hoops media guide from 69/70. Here is the centerfold with rosters. On the freshman team is a guy I became friends with who played lots of intramural hoops and softball with us, Bubba Greene. I was thinking the guide would show the schedules but they only have a page with blurbs about the season’s opponents.
I remember they were called the Kittens. They’d post their scores every once in a while in the paper.
I remember my dad taking me to see the UH junior varsity football team play LSU’s JV team. This would have been around 1970 or so. I don’t recall basketball having such a team but apparently they did.
Ollie Taylor and Poo Welch are 2 of my all-time fav basketball players.
And bringing this full circle… Welsh played for Tyler JC AGAINST our freshman team in the Dome in the prelim to the Game of the Century.
Didn’t recruit houston heavy in those days then so why folks get upset about it now?
I thought universities did away with JV basketball teams and I was wrong. North Carolina still has one. Here is an article on it.
I think duke has one too and they play unc pretty regularly
Can they call up those players if they lost players to injury?
Idk about call up byt the guy I played against was on UNC JV for 2 years and UNC varsity for 2 years.
This is the guy I played against… UNC’s Elvin for 2 years.
Yep the Coog freshman team played mainly JUCO teams like San Jac, Kilgore, Tyler, etc.
Loved watching our young kids play against guys like Ollie Taylor, Jeff Halliburton, Poo Welch and so many others
Probably walk ons since you can only have so many on scholarship
The first UHBB game I ever saw was 1964, the Varsity/Freshman game played in the old Jeppensen field house located just South of Jeppensen stadium, aka Robinson Stadium.
The Freshman team had a couple of guys named Hayes and Cheney and were coached by Harvey Pate…… varsity by Guy Lewis.
I think the freshman won !
In the 1960’s the city of Houston had quality depth has far as H.S. football, baseball and track but not basketball. The state of Texas was an desert has far has basketball is concerned.
Has you might be aware of the 1968 final four team starting lineup only had one Texan C Ken Spain.
Hayes and Chainey were from Louisiana, PG Reynolds from NJ, and F Lee from Mississippi.
John Wooden came down for an Texas H.S. basketball coaches meeting in the 1960’s(about 65) and 20 coaches showed up! The stereotype was most Texas H.S. basketball coaches of the 1960’s and 70’s were terrible.
Did you notice one member of the freshman team was Riley Odoms?
Very true. Around the country, the perception of Texas high school basketball players during that time was that they may be good athletes, but they were not fundamentally sound.
