As far as calculus is concerned it all depends on oral hygiene habits really. The only affect on teeth is staining. Where you really see the damage is in the soft tissue around the area were they like to hold the chew. The free and attached gingiva, alveolar mucosa, vestibule and buccal mucosa all experience visible changes usually in the form of a Leukoplakia and/or hyperkeratosis. These changes will go away after you stop dipping but you have to continue to monitor the area and if the leukoplakia comes back you need to biopsy.

I don’t mean to get on a soap box here but in my almost 14 years of drilling and filling I’ve managed to find oral cancer only a handful of times. Most recently last year, I had someone come in with a sore that would not heal on the lateral boarder of their tongue. In almost all those cases it has never been someone I’ve been seeing on a regular basis. It is usually a patient that comes in b/c they have noticed something different in there mouth recently, usually a white spot or sore that wont heal. When I ask them when they last had a cleaning, the answer is always “years ago” and when I get the pathology report back from the oral surgeon it is usually pretty advanced. Moral of the story is to get your teeth checked and cleaned on a regular basis, we look at more then just your teeth :).

I’ve got a cleaning appointment tomorrow. I was blessed with a wonderful mother who poor we may be always saw I got good dental care. I tried to do the same with my 3 sons. Take care of your teeth during your tender years and thereafter and you can avoid a lot of problems later in life. I am sure CoogDentist would agree.

I like Scotch

This is the closest I come to bourbon

Bourbon is the AMERICAN spirit!!!

I agree Coog63, a lot of the major procedures can be prevented if things are caught early.

You guys would be amazed how many dentist are UH grads. My two good friends from UH are dentist. One is in Fort Worth and the other is in Chicago at the naval base. I graduated NYU dental with a guy that went to UH and he is a dentist in the Rice University area. I am in a study club and one of the dentist there is a UH grad, he practices in spring. There was a dentist around me that retired also a UH grad, the Oral surgeon that I refer to, a former member of the state board of dental examiners (a position that is appointed by the governor), is a UH grad. I have season tickets to football and basketball and I’ve taken some of these guys to games with me. The older ones are always amazed at how things have changed on campus. I took the Oral Surgeon, he was at UH in the early 80’s, to the UH vs Louisville game, the game Ed Oliver went on a sack party. He loved it. Now we usually text back and forth during UH football and basketball games. Lots of dentist that are UH grads

I really enjoyed my time at UH. It was a lot of fun but I did live on campus and was active in student organizations.

Price: $4599

What this tells me is that UH needs a dental school next!

Mr. Tony Gwynn past away due to cancer complications from chewing tobacco. I had the privilege to know him a bit. One of the nicest gentleman you can meet. He coached at SDSU for the love of it. Stephen Strasburg was one of his great players. Tony’s brother is great too.
For anybody out there DO NOT CHEW

You bunch of uncivilized red necks. JUST KIDDING
You like French wines here is a France booze map.

Being from Normandie my uncle, Grand Father used to make Calvados and Cider. They are usually 120 to 160 proof. Grandma used to “add” a couple of drips with her coffee.
Here is a good Calvados.

They all range in price from $40 to $100’s.
Armagnac is pretty good. Personally I stick with wine. St. Emilions are my favorite.

While in Normandy, our guide recommended a bistro for dinner. It was also a wine store. The food was very good and the owner treated us to a sparkling wine and asked us to guess what it was made of. I, of course, guessed apples since they are known for them. No it was pear, simply fantastic.

After dinner, I asked about buying a bottle of Calvados, He showed me a bottle. He said “it is not the most expensive but it is the best” Cost about 60 euros. It was smoother than Mel Torme.

when I was in dental school I often thought of that and how great that would be. If it ever happened I would volunteer my time as clinic faculty.
