Thus confirming what many suspected…Major Applewhite was a complete moron.
You could tell with how conservative they were with the play calling up until the second half…
If he wasn’t up for the task, why take the job?
I wanted to believe Applewhite was going to keep things rolling… same players, same offensive scheme, and what a disastrous result. Especially on the defense. Feel bad for the players.
Believe it or not, it happens all the time in every profession and vocation.
Me too. I kept giving him the benefit of a doubt. But that comment of King’s above, sealed it for me.
Agree, CMA clearly wasn’t up to snuff. Still waiting on a good explanation on how he orchestrated the brilliant coup d’ etat that dethroned coach Orlando and killed post “ eye twitch” mojo. Wasn’t CMA like fourth on the list ?
Hunter wanted him badly. Went to Tilman and Renu and basically said Applewhite was the guy. High School coaches also sent in some letters pushing for Applewhite.
Choice was Riley, but Stoops stepped down and Riley got the OU job instead (I think Stoops may have been asked to step aside once they got wind we were about to hire Riley). After that, the choices weren’t great (Kiffin was unprepared, although Tilman was willing to go with him; Miles was lost during the interview, and Orlando just did not interview well at all). Hunter ended up being the deciding factor in all of it.
Well, they had me convinced he was the guy and I supported him. On the other hand, as long as a guy is our coach, I will publicly back him until the powers that be decides to replace him. I don’t like trying to undermine our coaching staff because I don’t see how it serves any positive purpose. The people who are in charge can plainly see what is going on and I defer to them.
The only thing is I sometimes have a hard time having confidence in our AD. I never thought Hunter was up to the job. I did think Rhodes was. Over the years, starting with Rudy Davalos, we had a run of bad AD’s until Maggard.
I publicly backed him too…thought Applewhite may have a chance to eventually grow into the job. Just the wrong job for him and for us at the wrong time. He’s still young; still has a chance to get back up there and I think he’ll probably do it. Hopefully, for his sake, he’ll have a longer leash to try and work through some things.
Hunter was great inside the program and took care of his coaches and players. Beyond that, Hunter was lost, especially with dealing with fans and boosters. Unfortunately for us, we needed the whole package and we probably upgraded with him leaving to Arkansas.
Rhoades was OK. There were some issues that he had, but Case covered a lot of those issues up…just as he did for Sumlin. Case probably got both Rhoades and Sumlin higher-paying jobs…hope those guys remember to thank him (I know Sumlin does).
Red, I agree wholeheartedly with your first paragraph, and agree with your second, about a run of bad ADs…except that Rudy Davalos was a really good AD. I was there, on the ground, working on the Athletic Board. We had zero money. Rudy was singlehanded responsible for the Moores donation, and athletic facility, when we needed it the most…
The second best thing he did was bring, through our board, academic integrity and graduation into our department. We started study halls, tutors, etc, and our kids started to have really good progress in graduation rates, which we still enjoy today…
He generated added income through floor seats in Basketball, as well as in other ways. He has always been a true advocate for UH, and was incredibly passionate for us.
He took the job at New Mexico, and that is when we went off a cliff with a Clown Brigade of ADs until Maggard (who saved us)…
You’re right on Davalos, I was thinking of Tom Ford. Dempsey was OK, but after him we had a couple of fill ins that didn’t do anything for us in Ford and another guy who’s name doesn’t come to me, was it Sasser or Kasser or something? That was a while back and I get a bit fuzzy on them.
