Found full game highlights from Kingston Flemings game at TSU yesterday against Bellaire.
Bellaire’s Henderson (Duke commit) looks more polished & developed than Flemings, but you can see why Flemings caught CKS’s eye with relentless defense, good offense & pretty good game distribution, getting all the guys in his team involved.
I’m not sure I buy this. Henderson had 13 turnovers—you can see a lot it in that tape. I don’t think he’s more polished at all; I just think he’s stronger, and in a high school setting, that’s more valuable. But that doesn’t mean he’s developed or polished.
A D1 wing who can’t really shoot, doesn’t have great handles, and struggles against the press isn’t what I’d call polished. Honestly, there’s no part of Henderson’s game that’s more polished than Flemings’. None. Even in areas where Fleming needs improvement, like shooting, he’s still a far better shooter than Henderson. He relies on being bigger for defense/rebounding, less technique and hustle
Even Henderson’s strength and body advantage is more of a high school advantage than a D1 advantage. At the high major level, Fleming’s agility is more beneficial. The “push the 6’3" guard out of the way to get a clear path to layups” strategy works in high school, but in D1, almost every team is sending a help post defender to block it.
I’m not just saying this because Fleming is our guy. When it was between Harwell and Henderson, and we weren’t sure who we’d get, I always advocated for Harwell because he can shoot. I wouldn’t trade any of our top three guys for Henderson.
Let me be clear—I’m not hating on Henderson. If we had landed him, his body combined with Sampson’s culture would have made him a rebounding and defensive monster.
Kingston’s aggressiveness to drive is something we need. You could also see his passing ability on display, it’s just teammates were cold. I’m excited to see him next year in a Coogs jersey.
I definitely did not come away thinking Henderson was more polished. He’s a great player, but his performance was 100% about physicality and 0% about polish. He outweighed every player on the Brennan roster by about 40 pounds and it showed. All he did was muscle his way to the basket and Brennan didn’t have an answer for it.
This game looked so similar to our 2022 Elite 8 game against Villanova. Brennan just couldn’t make a shot to save their life. They shot 38% from 3 on the season, but only 17% in this game. And they had a LOT of open looks.
I’ll be the 1st to say that I don’t know what I don’t know as someone that never played Basketball & doesn’t fully understand the sport (still learning by watching the Coogs).
But as a mere spectator, yeah, Henderson perhaps stiood out to me more because he was scoring and out-bodying most ppl on offense. He looks like a college athlete already.
I did notice the physical disparity between the 2 teams, and it makes sense considering that one is from Houston & the other is from SA…so Henderson also had teammates that could help make him look better.
Not sure about Henderson being more polished. He was a bigger body who was able to finish on smaller players. Not sure if he has any shooting game based on the other night. On a side night I am not a fan of Henderson flexing after every layup or the body language with his teammates as he continuously we turned over the ball.
