Larry Scott Out as PAC 12 Commissioner

Sometimes we don’t give ourselves enough credit.

Over the last 5 years…UH has been inside the top 10 in both of the major revenue producing sports. We are a large public school in a top 5 city and top 2 state. When elevated to the big stage - we sell out and get fan support throughout Houston. EVERYONE was talking about out win over Oklahoma.

And EVERYONE is starting to take notice of our Basketball team.

ESPN knows this…the PAC knows this…we are not some desperation G5 reach…we have the skins on the wall!

per Mercury news “The Pac-12 is expected to distribute approximately $33 million per schools in media rights for the 2019 fiscal year when its federal tax filings are made public in May, according to Hotline estimates.” so where are you getting 84M

The issue with that argument is that basically any team can sell out and draw eyeballs when they’re in the top 10. The next questions are how often do we get there, and what happens when we’re not there?

Look at Nebraska, as an example. Over the last 3 non-pandemic seasons, they went 4-8, 4-8, and 5-7, and they sold out every home game along the way. Meanwhile, if our football team loses two games before November we’re lucky to sell 20k tickets. Does ESPN really think advertisers will pay $30M per year for “usually 20k tickets sold, but once a generation they’ll be great”?

The $84mm is the entire payout from ESPN to the AAC for all media rights of all the schools combined (including tier 3 rights). So ESPN is paying that for UH, UCF, Memphis, Cincy, etc. together. I don’t know how anyone could make the logical leap that the combined rights for all these schools together is $84 million but somehow adding 2 of these schools to the Pac will increase the value of the Pac’s media rights by $200+ million annually.

So you don’t think that UH vs Washington is worth more than UH vs Tulsa?

That’s a bit of a strawman.

I think our incremental value to the Pac-12 media package would probably be worth more than the ~$7 million per year we’re getting pro rata as an AAC member. I don’t think it’s worth anywhere close to $115 million per year (which would be half of the amount needed in your scenario) and I don’t think SMU or whoever is worth $115 million either.

The AAC package also has all of our games against Memphis, UCF, Cincy and SMU not to mention all of the games those schools have against each other and ESPN pays $84 million a year for that substantially larger inventory of games than a conference slate of games added to the Pac for just UH.

Tillman And RK will get us in and work the numbers. We’re going to be in a p5 when all the dust settles. We’re a growth stock.

Right. I don’t think there’s ever been anything official. When the Pac-16 drama with UT potentially joining was happening I think there may have been some actual reporting that Baylor was a non-starter for that reason if nothing else (and there for sure were other reasons). I think there also may have been some actual reporting to that effect about BYU when Utah got the nod. But I may be misremembering and it may have just been informed speculation in both instances.

It’s just informed speculation on my part but I’m reasonably certain ND could get in if they wanted because obviously the value they bring is much higher and also it’s thought of differently in academic circles the faculty of the Pac-12 run in than BYU and Baylor, which I’m not passing a value judgment either way about.

Posted this article a couple years back when a similar discussion was happening on Coogfans, the second to last paragraph was the most interesting:

There are other solutions, those familiar with the conference say. Some believe expansion east is necessary. Get in bigger football-centric markets and into more easterly time zones. The league is examining expansion, Scott said, but is unlikely to pursue that until after the new TV deal.

Yes. Notre Dame excepted–for any conference it wants to be in, should it choose.

And you’re right that Notre Dame also has a strong academic reputation–easier to overlook anything not preferred.

ND is on another level and can go to any conf if they want regardless of religious affiliation.

Actually ND has a contract through 2036 that they HAVE to join the ACC if they decide to join a conference.

I don’t remember but I think it was something like a $40 million dollar penalty if they broke the contract.

But my main point is Rutgers didn’t add 30 to 50 mil to the coffers on day one or even 5 to 7 yrs out. UH could do the same for the pac in that regard which is the point. Growth stock is what Rutgers was and what UH is.There are approx 8 mil in New Jersey and well 7 mil in the Houston area. You could say UH is the flagship univ in an area with 7 mil which is correct plus the recruiting area and a foothold in Texas. I like our chances and conferences look at that and nationally we are well respected. It’s just in Texas we get negative vibes from schools and fans that have fear.

Rutgers and Maryland to the B1G was never about growth or on-field (or off-field) success for those teams. They were added to the B1G to expand BTN subscribership by getting the network carried on basic cable in NYC and DC. That path isn’t there anymore due to cord-cutting, and it’s becoming increasingly apparent that those adds were a mistake.

Espn is paying more for the adds but even with cord cutters, people will still find a way to watch as more selective customers just buy espn plus etc. They Will still watch and pay vs paying for the whole cable package which is why espn is promoting espn plus etc.

Nobody gives a crap about Rutgers football in New York or New Jersey for that matter.

Unless I’m mistaken, a subscription to ESPN+ does not give you access to ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, or ESPN News. You still need a cable, satellite, or streaming service like FUBO or SlingTV to watch those “cable” channels.

Enough with your rants. You and I have no clue what the PAC will do next.
Do you have a special gift? Are you telling us you know the future?

What we know for sure is that every option is on the table for the PAC. They will do what they think is best for them. Clear enough?

Yeah but you can jam the Big 10 network on the nation’s largest media market’s basic cable and charge a bunch of people for it.

There are more UT and A&M fans in the Houston area than anything else.
