Louisiana Bd. mtg: LSU has a deficit…move G6 LA schools to FCS?

I’m not making this up. Not saying it’s going to happen, but certain LSU people are suggesting it.

Read on.

Nevermind that LSU athletics ran a $44 million deficit last fiscal year.

This is the abject hubris of these criminals.
I never advocate for government involvement but I think we’re getting close to needing a federal prosecutor to audit and show Congress how utterly collusive this arrangement is.

Every day you wake up and see them whittling away like beavers in the infrastructure.

Congress?

Well, you need someone to scare these people straight. The threat is better than the application.

Citing a broader sustainability crisis across the state, Board of Regents member Wilbert Pryor suggested that three of Louisiana’s G6 programs competing in the top-tier Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) should take a “slice of humble pie” and drop down to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

The three schools singled out and their reported athletic deficits include:

  • UL Lafayette (Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns): $20 million deficit
  • Louisiana Tech Bulldogs: $17 million deficit
  • ULM Warhawks: $10 million deficit

LSU lost $44 million in 2025-26 (June to June)

Pryor argued that continuing to chase Division I FBS football is a financial “sinking hole” for these universities. While no official action has been taken, University of Louisiana System President Rick Gallot confirmed that a sustainability evaluation is being conducted by Deloitte to determine necessary cost-reduction steps.

Wilbert Pryor is a native of Shreveport, Mr. Pryor is a graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., where he was a football letterman and the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center.

Gotta love that math.

ULaLa, LT, and ULM lost $47m combined. LSU lost $44m alone despite the SEC. But the 3 others are the problem. Too big to fail!

I’m surprised we’re still seeing schools move up to FBS. I really thought we’d see the opposite happening.

The thing is that nothing between FBS and D-III is really tenable. In FCS and D-II you still have huge scholarship counts and all of the travel costs but with near-zero TV money and lower attendance at lower prices. The economics do not work; if you can’t afford FBS it’s a better deal to drop Football entirely than it is to go down a level.

Most FBS colleges run athletic department deficits.

Maybe don’t spend $54 million buying out your HC

Laws need to be made. None of this any longer makes sense.

What good are laws if they can be ignored? :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

Edit:
Seriously tho, wouldn’t need any laws if people just remember college sports is only for passing time and bragging rights. That’s a hill I’d die on. :pouting_cat:

People talk about college football taking promotion and relegation from soccer, but I think taking UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules would be a lot more beneficial. We gotta put an end to the whole thing schools do where they take on a buttload of debt in hopes that, through what amounts to magical thinking, it will somehow pay for itself.

The grate is the schools that cheated in the 60’s-2000’s also created a network of like-minded institutions that began eating away at the framework of college football. They are so good at the greed game they are relied on to mold, manage, and police the very criminal enterprise they grift through. And when Congress and the Media want thoughtful answers who they go to?

Saban (Bama), Meyer (Florida/OSU), and Stoops (Oklahoma). Among other righteous people.

If Federal and State/local taxes are going into funding these schools, then legislatures should have some say.
If your program deficit spends then you need to cut the budget. Universities are cutting academic majors that typically do not make sense for earning a living.
Sports need to do the same. When you sell 90,000 tickets and have tv contracts of $35MM, you need to make that money work without asking the state for more.

This is crazy. I’m from Louisiana and like lsu but this is wrong.

My original home state of Louisiana where I grew up is crazy lol

We got a current repeat with the Manchester City violations.

Financial fair play in college sports will ruin lots of programs and heavily affect non-revenue sports.
