Major Applewhite knew LSU was ‘possibility’ before Tom Herman took Texas job

.

Distracted all season long. Better win.

Wow! At least Major is being honest. From everything I have gather was that once Big 12 shot down UH, Judas was gone. Hopefully he is now at his dream job. He shouldn’t have just given it 50 percent of effort though.

He was gone before that moment. He was planning to leave after the season from the get go, but as soon as LSU opened, those efforts went into overdrive.

He probably would have left last year for South Carolina, but the idea of UT opening after this season, and Mack Brown telling him to stay because of that, kept him at UH.

To anyone who may know the answer to the following questions:

Can UH put something in a coaches’ contract that essentially terminates the coach if they are looking for other jobs while they are under contract?

If that is possible, then could we take it a step further and also get the buyout money from them as well.

Lets say UH goes 10-2 with an AAC west title. If word got around that Applewhite was flirting with other universities, would it be within our rights to fire him on the spot and promote an assistant coach, while at the same time getting the remaining value of the contract?

Thanks

Good luck proving that. They don’t ever officially interview until the season is over. Otherwise, it’s all done through agents. We got a very good recruiting class out of Herman last year so at least he didn’t leave after one year. However, it would have been nice for him to go to a place like USCe or LSU and then dangle other jobs in front of the administration. He’ll find a way to do it at Texas as well. If he’s successful.

For those that really think UT is Herman’s dream job…well they better wake up!

They were off to LSU as early as last year. Cmon, do you honestly believe the conversations were quick, brief and back to business at hand. Bull, these clowns were out, and when Charlie got canned before Memphis, they dropped LSU like a fart and headed to forty acres.
SMU does not even remotely happen if those conversation were brief. With due respect, it’s too early to start blowing smoke over our orifices … too early.

There’s usually a clause in coach’s contracts stating that they aren’t allowed to negotiate with another university while under contract or risk termination. Problem is, they don’t usually negotiate unless they are going to take the job so terminating them does nothing at that point.

I believe there was a case of a coach negotiating years back; when word got out, the university fired him and he didn’t get the new job. Can’t remember who it was or when.

Unfortunately, the coaches and the agents hold all the cards. If you try to take a hard-line stance, the agents will then steer their top clients away from your coaching position.

Rumor is that our former coach conducted the negotiations on his own time, without the agent being too involved.

CTH openly admitted on 97.5 that “talks got very intense” with another school.
UH should have fired him and hired someone who would see our season through to the end.

And in regards to agents pushing the high profile clients away from us because of how we do business, well they can keep them. IMO we should not hire mercenary coaches. If you have zero intentions of honoring the 5 year deal then we will find someone else.

Plenty of quality coaches to choose from.

Tilman played hard ball this last go round and I applaud him for it.

June Jones nearly took the Az State job in 2011 before the Toad did. Maybe they backed off and gave it to Toad or he and Leigh Steinberg played hardball. Anyway, he was mentally out at that point and should have been fired. He wasted a couple years and sunk the Ponies to depths they were when he was canned midseason 2014.

pray10, I can imagine CTH taking on the negotiations himself. He’s very hands-on. If that was the case, he is really a habitual liar. Players had apparently heard assistants talking during practice about leaving as well.

Would laugh my ass off if he took the Texans OC job

He will not take a coordinator job. He will take a NFL HC job within the next four years if he has 1 good and 2 great years at Texas-Austin.

In CTH’s mind, he’s the heir apparent to Meyer. UT is not his dream job. Just another stepping stone. Will be absolutely hilarious when the tsips learn that one the hard way.

The poaching of UH recruits by CTH less than a week before signing day has me thinking about this again. He did so much good for this university, while at the same time sharpening the knife to put in our backs.

Below are what-if scenarios that mean nothing. Just message board revisionist history. Stop now if that doesn’t interest you.

Think about the pros and cons since we heard the rumors of him and South Carolina in the week leading up to the UCONN game (Nov 2015). Ask yourself if CMA or CTO could replicate the pros without having to deal with the cons.

Pros:
AAC Championship
Peach bowl victory
Highest ranked G5 class in stars era
Victories over 2 top 5 teams
Elevated UH football into the national spotlight

Cons:
Completely unpreprared for UCONN, SMU, and Memphis due to a distracted coach.
Numerous injuries caused by extreme practice habits.
Squandered 2017 class because of coaching change.
Stealing UH recruits while at UT
Missed out on an 11-1 season (Navy is the only loss I don’t blame CTH for).
Pray 10 hinted at this - Put us behind the 8 ball for the 2018 class by offering too many high profile players instead of getting ahead on the 3 star guys that won UH a NY6 Bowl.

Could you imagine the vitriol from firing a 10-1 first year head coach!? It would be historic. But it might have been better for us in the long run.

The first time CMA starts looking around, get him out of here. I want players, coaches and administrators that are committed to UH!

I still take that in a heartbeat. 22-4 with wins over Florida State, OU & Louisville? We had as many great wins in the past two seasons as we have had in the past 20 years. Was Herman actively pursuing other jobs? Of course. But we also didn’t have the depth to withstand all of the injuries. Were they partly his doing due to the practice regimen? Possibly. I might be in the minority around here but I look back at last season as a success. I’d argue that beating OU and Louisville did far more for the program than how much losses to SMU and Memphis might have hurt it.

Unfortunately we’re on the outside looking in right now. Things won’t change until we can find a way into a P5 conference and can finally level the playing field somewhat in terms of money. That’s a fact. Coaches want to win at the highest level. If we’re worried about them leaving than we’re handicapping ourselves with a coaching staff that won’t be competitive. Hire the best coach we can find each time out. In all fairness to CTH, he left the program in a better state than when he got here and I don’t even think that is arguable. It sucks to get tossed aside but it’s a reminder of how much farther we have to go as a program. If other “big time” programs are circling our coaches as hiring targets we’re doing something right.

Interesting point. I will have to agree with you for one reason only. Navy was going to win the west regardless of what we did. So if we can’t get a NY6 game than we might as well beat top 5 P5 teams.

This is a popular opinion. But have you considered the idea that UH can hire coaches that want to stay for 4 years (see the first signing class graduate), AND are very talented and competitive?

UH must demand a MINIMUM amount of loyalty. Leaving before 3 years is non-negotiable. Find quality coaches who can agree to that.

Some of you have no idea what you are talking about. He has a masters from UT, and it’s been said from the beginning if him being at UH that UT was his dram job.

I agree, a minimum of four years does seem fair. But we’re hiring guys that have no real ties to the University. They are just taking a job. Had we lost to Florida State and OU, Herman is likely here another year or two.

I think his case was a bit more meteoric by comparison than most. He benefited greatly from inheriting a talented roster and lucking out with our scheduling, neither of which he had anything to do with.

My only concern about coaching changes is the effect on recruiting. We’ve already seen this year both sides of that equation. Herman has raided our recruits and Applewhite has done a pretty admirable job salvaging the class with a chance to actually have a solid one.
