Holy that offense at So. Alabama. Imagine if they win out or make the playoff
What are the hot take odds that UH hires him back as an OC, pays him a crap ton, then prepares him for a P5 head coaching gig he deserves.

I’ve always held the same opinion that Applewhite got screwed over as soon as Herman left.
Herman took practically the entire staff and multiple recruits, and the expectations were set way, way too high after said circumstances.
If King didn’t get hurt in 2018, I guarantee we would’ve made it to the championship game.
He went 8-5 here. We don’t stand for that type of record around here. Exception for Willie.
We were 7-3 up until King got hurt
Hey I’m just bring up with RK said.
head coach at USA tops OC at Houston any day of the week…get real he would never come back to Houston even as head coach…he is smarter than that, he can do better than that, and wants no part of that…Houston is not Alabama or any place that has the ability to pull a head D1-A coach to a coordinator position
No way Applewhite comes back here as an OC. I always thought he would grow into the job and be a good coach. We fell apart at the end of ‘18 because we were decimated by injuries. We had 230-pound true freshmen starting in the interior defensive line.
I think Applewhite wasn’t ready for the HC job, unfortunately. However I doubt he comes back to UH for anything.
However, had you told me in 98 or 99 that Alvin Brooks would come back as an assistant, stay 11 years under two different head coaches, I would have said you belong in a psychiatric hospital.
Wasn’t it the Oliver incident that soured the boards view on CMA. Maybe misremembering
That was on Oliver. He was told to give up the jacket (they were reserved for players who were actually playing) by an equipment manager but wouldn’t do it. He thought he could do whatever he wanted. I think fans soured on Applewhite (didn’t help that he went to UT) because he lost four of his last five games, and UH gave up 226 points in the four losses, including an embarrassing thumping by Army. It really wasn’t Applewhite’s fault. As I mentioned, the team, especially the defense, had been decimated by injuries, and we had no depth.
Without a doubt, Applewhite needed to go, but I fully support Applewhite in the Ed Oliver jacket incident. Ed publicly showed he was above team rules and demonstrated a lack of respect for his head coach. Ed was a great player at UH but Ed was all about Ed.
I spoke to a player on the team, they loved Applewhite. They were on his side on the Oliver stuff. I think he got that job too early.
The thing with Ed was that by that point, he pretty much felt like he was doing UH a favor by sticking around. If there was a transfer portal back then, he would have been at LSU.
Also if there had been NIL back then, I don’t think he would have shut it down after the injury against Navy since he would have already been making millions.
He’s one of the best to ever play here and we saw that when he came back the week after Jacketgate and played in the Memphis game.
USA lost to UNT at home. The Jags could still win their conference.
I don’t think Ed’s place in the history of the University is in question. NIL would have meant Ed never came here. I am thrilled he did, he’s awesome. I thought it was clear he was wrong on that one. Applewhite got a lot of crap, because he was Major and Ed was Ed.
I am higher on the tenure of Apple than some on this board that are adamant that Applewhite was essentially a terrible HC. Been said time and time again but I’ll just throw out there that in general Apple would win the ‘easier games’ you expect to win which in the American would put us over .500 and with what we’ve put up with since he’s been gone that ain’t all that bad let’s be honest (4 of 6 the seasons after he got fired will be losing seasons with it being more likely than not 5 of 7 after next year unless we have a miraculous uptick in our program so yeah…)
Applewhite’s losses:
2016:
2017:
2018:
His record at TDECU was 9-3 which was nice as a fan going to games and expecting to win in contrast to Holgy who went 1-5 in the city of Houston his first year as HC with the only W against PVAMU.
In his 2+ years as HC I see only one complete head scratcher loss like ‘WTF we NEVER should have lost that game’ - Tulsa but at least it wasn’t in front of the home crowd. All his losses were against winning/ranked teams or on the road or Big 12 team, etc… obviously Herman was typically winning those games so there was a drop off but to say he was ‘trash’ or ‘terrible’ I disagree. We went from the top of the mountain with Herman to a ‘solid’ G5 coach in Applewhite. Don’t think he was good enough to carry us successfully into the Big 12 but as we can see that is no easy task - Holgy couldn’t do it and so far Fritz is having a tough time as well (obviously he needs and will get a couple years before we can definitively judge him).
G5 teams can poach HC from tortilla tech any day though
If Ed was all about Ed he wouldn’t have even played at UH imo…
Unfortunate incident between them.
ok I had forgotten about King’s injury that year. I couldn’t even recall who the replacement QB was… couldnt’ have been Allen. Anyway I’d imagine as adequate as King was they could’ve won one of those last two games and been more competitive vs Army. And Major gets another chance. Wild how one injury leads to so many dominos
Plus, Applesauce helped Herman by letting him stay in his Austin home.
They were both helping UT…CMA didn’t get screwed over.
