He’s one of the most famous names over the last decade when it comes to Texas football. He was the underdog that scrapped and beat out the pretty boy to help Texas win while he was there. Later, he was at Rice and made them interesting for the first time in a long time as OC. He then came back to Texas and the fanbase loved him even with the indiscretion on his record. Herman also tabbed him because of who he was when he came to Houston. Even Mack Brown loves him. But check out Bryson Smith’s and Daniel Young’s comments immediately after the hire; they love the choice.
He also coached a D that gave up 46 to Navy, 48 to Memphis, and 31 to Tulsa. 3 performances like that each year in the BIG12 gets you a nice trip to the Holiday, Gator, Alamo or Sun Bowl. UT’s not shelling out the big $$ for that. Again, it’s personnel plus coaching. There’s too much ignoring of how special some of the players have been that we’ve had on the roster these past few seasons. I’m in the wait and see category as to how he does at UT, he didn’t have to develop many UH contributors, he inherited all of them and #10 is just plain freakish.
Gary Patterson is one heck of a solid D coach and look how his team did this year. I’d take him coaching my D all day long too.
It’s really dumb to bring up the Navy game since three of the top four defensive players were out for that game AND the offense and special teams gave up 19 points. We all know why the team played so bad against Memphis. At least I hope you figured it out by now.
I’ll agree with you on both. So you don’t think there will be injured players or distractions at UT then huh? And this is what I’m talking about - its as much the players as the coaching - it’s both. Ask David Gibbs.
Do you really want to compare the depth chart at UH and UT? lol UH’s first team is mostly 3 and 4 star players and the second team is mostly 2 stars and freshmen. UT’s first team is all 4 and 5 star recruits and their second team is mostly 4 stars as well.
OK you’re right. All the success of the Herman era was him and Orlando. The players are below average and these miracle working coaches made the difference. There’s no way they might have been disrespected coming out of HS and were gamers who could actually play the game rather than score big at scout and rivals combines. They couldn’t possibly have worked harder to develop themselves into better college players than the 4 and 5 star guys at UT. Way to throw them and their achievements under the bus, “fan”.
UH’s greatest comeback ever was done by a bunch of guys coached by an interim DC, just 2 bowls ago. They beat a bunch of 3-4 stars from Pennsylvania. The core of those guys beat a bunch of 4 and 5 stars from Florida last year. Must have been all coaching.
Yes. The head coach, even the interim, doesn’t go on the road recruiting. Applewhite is the better recruiter, so they needed him out there.
Of course Orlando is gone. No way both coordinators were staying.
I’m hearing co-DC Craig Navair stick around as new DC. No confirmation on that. He has been DC at Rice and Texas State, I’m sure he’d run a defense much like Orlando’s, and he’s a great recruiter locally.
Ed looked sad in that tweet about Orlando, but he also tweeted, “Let’s GOOOO!” after MA had been announced as HC.
This is the $1M question.
What I am truly hoping for is that he recruits a “local” DC. It is great to be productive in recruiting local offensive players but we desperately need “the other side of the mirror” Just imagine if we can keep recruiting great local talents?
So the question goes then if Craig Naivar is not sticking around and we still need a DC, who do you want or recommend? How many old schoolers want their boy Wade?
You are correct. Those are some really good players. The star system is like anything else, just a system. If you look throughout the recruiting process, it is amazing how the star rating of a player will change once the big schools become interested. There have been plenty of two star athletes that went on to very successful careers in the NFL. While it’s nice to get three and four star athletes, it won’t always happen for us. What we can do is get some great athletes that went under the radar and will develop into great players. Look at Lamarque Davis. He is not even rated on 24/7 and a two star on scout. His rating will go up if big schools start expressing interest. The success we had is a combination of many things. However, nothing should diminish the fact that the players had talent. I don’t care how good the coaches are, if you don’t have talent you won’t win. We had and have some very good athletes.
I’m surprised that Judas the fake is actually taking almost his whole coaching staff, minus Applewhite. Just because it work at UH, doesn’t mean it will work at UT.
If I’m not mistaking Sumlin did the same thing. He took pretty much everyone. Offense, defense, and strength and conditioning. He left special teams - Levine.
