Some personal news to share: June 12 will be my last night on FOX 26 News at Nine. I’m retiring after 37 years on the job (43 in Houston). Growing up in my hometown of Hempstead I dreamed of being a sportscaster on television in Houston. FOX 26 helped make that dream…”
Mark has always been by the book. Never ever tried to glorify his position for self gain. Just a constant professional throughout his entire career.
Some could say the sports media business flew right by him with all these different platforms to post something controversial or unsubstantiated.
If you ever read a Mark Berman tweet, you know it’s been verified and checked twice before tweeted. He doesn’t interest the masses with his by the book approach, but dude never got a breaking story wrong.
I was watching a game from the PSJ era on You Tube and he was the color commentator with Mike Edmunds(I think) play-by-play. I didn’t realize he announced some of those games.
I got to know Mark a little bit when we were both students in the journalism program at UH. He always seemed like a guy who would work hard and have a good career, and he sure did! Congrats to Mark on his retirement, and thanks for all the work covering Houston sports over the years. Well done.
A true professional. While many/most in the local lip flapping sports broadcast industry have gone out of their way to not provide/give UH its due in terms of responsible and fairly allocated reporting, Berman did.
“We” UH fans haven’t asked for local lip flappers to go ALL UH ALL THE TIME !!! And while they certainly wouldn’t do that, they instead have gone out of their way to ignore or belittle UH as the norm (with the exception of when it fit their needs and agenda to be “100% behind UH like we always have been, cough, cough.”).
We don’t need either. Berman played it down the middle as it should have been. Just one of the benefits that a large D1 school in a large city with athletic programs SHOULD enjoy.
I will miss him. I always knew I was getting old school sports from Berman. No fluff and completely content at being a proud homer. UH is this city’s college. Berman never forgot that.
We should let him in all home games for free and Lauren Leal could bring a mic up to him and he could give us a entertaining sports report during a timeout. That would be fun.
Actually, Lauren is another one of the hardest working local personalities around, and a UH grad. Don’t know if she’s a journalist like Berman but definitely is everywhere all the time, and reps the Coogs
