Massive Instability Since Yeoman Retired

I believe that was Cedric Dempsey with probably the worst decision ever out of this Athletic Department and that’s saying something.

Remember this guy?

Thought I’d just add our coaches winning percentages:

Herman .846
Meek .675 ??? Coached 20 games
Sumlin .673
Pardee .662
Yeoman .594
Applewhite .577
Levine .553
Briles .548
Jenkins .545
—cut—
Holgorsen .525

Fritz, counting 8 years at Tulane, is at .535.
Fritz career .660.

You can debate about comparing eras and probation and BCS and G5 and on and on

Because Texas and Texas A&M football can both have sub .500 seasons and still get nationwide eyeballs. UH simply cannot do this unless they are having a Cinderella year.

Texas can be 5-7, but their benefit is that they play other big brand schools like LSU, Georgia, Bama, etc… which generates eyeballs.

UH vs. Arizona State is not going to generate big eyeballs (again, unless UH is having a great season)

That being said, i still believe in Fritz, and I think many people on this message board are overreacting by Saturday’s loss. I don’t think they truly understand what Fritz has to piece together to get this program back on track.

Massivist Instability since Yeoman

We do need to win. But we also need to look good on the field. No one wants to see a boring offense or defense. The reason why we all love sports is because of the skill, athleticism and miracles that happen. If you go see someone running for 1 yard or throwing and missing its not enjoyable. It hasnt been since applewhite and briles.

I read on the Tulane fan boards (granted it’s like the same 7 people talking to each other) that Fritz tends to be really conservative. And his offense is boring.

Fritz doesn’t have an offensive scheme he holds to consistently. His teams have usually used the talent available to produce the best results possible. Whatever scheme that ends up being, he will expect his coordinator to use.

Winning is never boring in my opinion.

Do not say that Fritz is the wrong hire.

Just having 11 Head Coaches in 38 seasons.

The NIL discussion is moot. We did not have NIL until a few years ago. Applewhite and Dana were hired pre-NIL. So were all the others. Decisions were made not based on fund-raising but rather based on coaching and recruiting abilities. We hired 10 guys in that prior era.

There is something at UH that causes our coaching futility. And we are not alone. Most likely it is the demise of our SWC membership. From 1996-2022 we were in CUSA and The AAC while recruiting against Big 12 and SEC members. We lost those battles. Briles, Sumlin, and Herman all left for Big 12 jobs. As they should.

Fritz has a Big 12 job and should be his last job. He can achieve great things at UH. As did Yeoman and Pardee.

Truth is, the fix is long and many of us don’t have the stomach for it. With Dana leaving the cupboards bare and over 60 transfers, it’s Year 1 of a 3 year rebuild. And if we want to do our part, we have to show up to all the home games (I did vs UNLV and I’ll be there for the rest of them), donate money to the NIL and grow thicker skin when it comes to adversity we knew would happen. It only hurts the program when the hardcores all freak out.

Fritz is universally considered a great coach. Now it’s just time plus supporter investment to create long term success

Went to look for some cornflakes to eat, none in the cupboard. Damn you Dana!

If you want stability for football coaches at UH then our administration have to do their job with securing more NIL funds and increasing our core fanbase.

Stop bleeding the current fanbase dry and get some more graduate, potential fans, corporations, local businesses involved.

If the up and comers like Briles, Sumlin, and Herman want to leave, then so be it as long as we keep up with resources which is what we are good at other than NIL.

Briles leaving allowed us to keep Keenum for 4+ years.
Sumlin and Keenum leaving lead us to building TDECU Stadium.
Herman leaving lead us to the indoor practice facility.
Holgorsen leaving gave us the football ops building.

There will never be cornflakes in cupboard in this era unless you have plenty of NIL in the mattress.

Any old head UH fb player will tell you NIL is why UH was able to get athletes before NIL even was a thing

Are speaking of “Name Image Likeness” or are you just speaking about paying players?

You are right…
When at SHSU he ran a wide open offense based on the players he inherited.
At Georgia Southern he ran a lot of option.
He went with a run based O at Tulane because he did not have the people to win scoring contests.
I think if we retained Brown, Golden, and some of the other portal transfers you would have seen a different offense.
He tends to gear his offense and defense to the people he has on hand.
Don’t be surprised when mid season hits and we win a couple surprise games for whatever reason.

Looking back, the CDH hire will be seen as the catastrophe it was, despite the one 12-2 season.

Of all the coaches that came through our doors, he may have done the most damage. While Dana Dimmel had a worse record, at least he recruited well and we were in the CUSA. Even compared to that, the American was a much better and stronger conference; heck it was the only G5 to get a team in the CFP.

There are 4 with worse records at UH: Dimel, Helton,Wallace, and Lamar.

9 Dana Dimel 2000–2002 34 8 26 0.235 5 17 0.227 0 0
8 Kim Helton 1993–1999 78 24 53 1 0.314 15 28 1 0.352 0 1 1 0
1 Jewell Wallace 1946–1947 21 7 14 0 0.333 1 10 0 0.091 0 0
4 Hal Lahar 1957–1961 49 24 23 2 0.510 8 3 0 0.727

Yeoman is No. 5 on the winning list but the only one of the entire bunch even remotely a Hall of Famer…
