Massive Instability Since Yeoman Retired

Getting this post back on topic, instability is the new normal in college sports. One way or another, the median coach nowadays lasts about 2.5 years. Unless you’re an upper-bound P4 job, your coach is out the door one way or the other real quick, and even then, we’ve seen schools like FSU, OU, Michigan (if you count the NFL) and Notre Dame get poached in the last couple years. Sustainability and stability are largely a matter of luck.

For much the same reason, I think programs should prioritize recruiting when making hires. If your coach is gonna be gone in a couple years anyway, it’s best that he leaves as much of a workable roster as possible behind.

We need more “Tier 1” college students !

:joy:

It would help lol

By the by if we include Yeoman’s last season of 1986 we have had 12 Coaches in 39 seasons.

Our last 6 coaches served 5, 4, 3, 2, 2, and 5. An average of 3.5 years per Coach. 3 of the 6 were fired.

Stats speak for themselves. Our Brain Trust has hired good Coaches only to lose them to The Big 12 or has hired duds.

We are in The Big 12 so that issue is eliminated. We need Fritz to be here more than 5 years. It takes that long to create quality, long-term recruiting connections.

Fritz is a grandpa already in his 60s.
I’m not a boomer or gen X, but those age groups doesn’t have 5 years either.

The problem is that we prioritize the HC over our AD and we keep spinning our wheels

Hire a strong AD and then implement the type of program you want, recruiting expectations, style of play, alignment, connections, NIL, etc and THEN find a plug and place coach that fits the AD’s vision.

Seems like we have huge turn over in both jobs and neither are aligned…EVER

Those of us who were around for the Yeoman years are weary of the never-ending cycle of rebuilding the program. With every new coach, Lucy promises to hold the football and we end up on our backs cursing ourselves for having fallen for it.

Comparing any prior era to this NIL era is ridiculous.

It is like comparing the Ice Age to this era.

And, Herman’s schedule always had top P5 programs that we beat.

Dana was hired PRIOR to the NIL era. So was Applewhite.

7 of our past 12 Coaches have been fired.

This problem is not exclusive to UH. Indeed, coaching failures may be the norm. Look 90 miles North for the poster child of this issue.

Norvell at Fla. St. is becoming the most recent question mark. In The Top 10 and favored to make The CFP he has opened 0-2. and both losses are conference losses. He probably cannot win The ACC. Already out of The CFP.

Our Leaders botched the Lane Kiffin possible hiring in 2017. Applewhite then lasts 2 seasons. Our message board was flooded by WVU fans when we hired Dana. Their comments proved to be true. The fans knew more than did Fertitta.
Nothing wrong with Fritz except he has to rebuild at age 64.

I simply disagree. Kiffin, while a good coach, was not a good fit for UH. His refusal to agree to a hefty buyout signaled he was just passing through waiting for a better opportunity. Having gotten burned by Briles, Sumlin and Herman, I do not blame Fertitta and Co. for wanting someone long term. Kiffin was with FAU two years. Most likely the same scenario would have happened at UH until the SEC came calling.

The Fertitta selection lasted 2 seasons. Had most embarrassing Bowl loss in Cougar history.

That was better than Kiffin?? Please explain

The fans do not hire the coaches.

yes…Briles, Sumlin, Herman left us better than they found us…

Why mess with the proven formula?

KIffin would have been highly motivated to keep UH in the realm of relevancy

Kiffin would have ended up leaving us as soon as an SEC came calling unfortunately

If the SEC came calling, that would obviously mean he’d done something right. I’ll take it.

Herman was the right guy at the right moment. Both he and our trajectory would have been much different if he had stayed.

His schtick was bull crap but we ate it up and would have continued to eat it up.

Seriously?? That’s insanity.

Disagree about Herman leaving us better !!

Massive instability was created intentionally by some of our ex-SWC mates, who rolled on to the then Big 8, which became the Big 12. Same culprits created massive instability in the Big 12 and rolled on. Waiting to see what instability there going to cause over the years in their new conference. Don’t need to mention names we know who they are.
