Wouldn’t surprise me. A coach as competitive as Saban will, at some point, yearn to return to coaching.

If he did decide to return, it would have to be a school with deep enough pockets to compete with all the rich schools and allowed total autonomy. Noy many AD’s would give up such control.

Thinking about schools with enough money and willing to cede control and currently unhappy with football:

  1. USC
  2. OU
  3. Auburn
  4. Michigan

If he decided to return, any AD who wanted to remain AD, would likely give him complete control of the football team. The Big Bag donors would tell him to do whatever Saban wanted. But, I just don’t think Saban wants to get into these bidding wars where the kids are free to leave for more money any time they wish.

I’m not sure Saban would return to the SEC out of respect for Alabama. Saban coached at Michigan St. so Michigan is a possibility, if Sherrone Moore flops. The natives are restless in Tallahassee, after Florida St. went from 13-1 in 2023 to 2-10 in 2024. Mike Norvell is on a short leash. Texas A&M would be, just to make headlines, but they are still paying off Jimbo Fisher. Here is a hot take. Bill Belichick leaves North Carolina after a year and North Carolina goes after Nick Saban.

OU makes sense. I don’t think they’ve completely soured on Venables, but his winning percentage is 56%. If they end up around .500 again he could be out.

If he is coming back that will be USC. He was close to them a few years back. Story was that the bama brass found out and gave Saban a ton more money. riley has to win big this season or he is gone. Look at how much money they are spending on recruits. Best class so far.

I’ll put it more appropriately: if he fails to meet expectations.

He has until after year three to show promise imo, that’s when his buyout is crazy low.
