Yeah there is mad hate for the Astros, that is for sure. That is sad and a turnaround from prior years. I recall during 2017 and 2018 that the Astros were quite popular in areas outside of Texas. I used to see kids and young adults wearing Astros gear all the time when I lived in the Northeast. That cheating scandal has really hurt them.
UH is still pretty popular. Most people I talk to in Atlanta, DC metro and the surrounding areas love the Coogs and still talk about Andre Ware. I think that playing in the AAC gave us great exposure on the east coast.
Nothing to see here. Rather the Astros be hated than ignored.
Regarding the Coogs, a few years in the Big XII with some success establishes our pedigree with the sports media so they can say good things about us without having to qualify their remarks. In the meantime, does it matter?
A lot of people hate the Patriots because they won and cheated. How does it matter with the ones loving the Patriots? They could care less.
The Astros just have to keep winning. They will be hated even more. Who cares? There is also a media polarization that come into play. Everything has to be East coast West coast with very little in between.
Example:
Hakeem the Dream Olajuwon
What kind of media status would he have if he had played for the Knicks or Celtics?
A super media star would be an understatement. How much does the media talk about the Houston Rockets winning two titles? Close to never.
The Astros did not help themselves with an horrible P.R. department. Stealing signs started when Baseball coaches started using signs. Everybody knows it.
I actually wrote this for the Look a like thread but think it is a valid post for here as well.I actually think it was that old beat writer Murphy for UH that started the look alike thing for opponents the week of the game. He was so good because he was a Coog and got it. The Chron showed what they think of the Coogs when they let Murphy go. He was a good beat writer that could get fans good info but also brought humor especially on the UH blog on the Chron he use to do which something Duarte is not capable of. I want Muphy back and Duarte can go cover UT. Duarte is a good writer but his heart and passion are not in it especially when he has click bait articles and stirs the pot. The Chron beat writer should be a Coog!
I would love for the Coogs and Astros to make this a double win day for Houston.
Frankly, I don’t care what everyone else thinks about the Astros. Like Chris Bassitt (A’s pitcher) said last week, the Astros were the guinea pig- other teams were doing it, the Astros just happened to get caught. Does it excuse what they did? No- but you’d have to have your head buried in the sand to think they were the only ones doing it. A number of players, who don’t have any ties to the Astros, have said other teams were guilty as well. The Red Sox were caught as well- and ended up winning a championship also- but it doesn’t seem they get near the hate the Astros do. As much as I want the Astros to win the World Series because they are my favorite team, I almost want them to win it more because of all the irrational hate.
As far as the Coogs go, beating SMU today would be huge. SMU is good, but I don’t think they are any better than UH. The Coogs have to prove it on the field, and I think they will. I’ve said this before, and I still think it today- once UH has a few years (maybe only one or two) in the Big 12, they will be a dominant force in the conference in multiple sports. They might not win it every year, but they will be consistently near the top of the standings. Top recruits from this area will now be able to compete at the highest level without having to leave the city to go to college. It might take a few years, but the surge is coming, and I can’t wait!
