Correct, Rutgers is not in New York but it is in the New York market. Rutgers is 36 miles from Manhattan Island therefore they are in the New York market which gives the Big 10 a lot of eyeballs.
Correct. The Big 10 is only using Rutgers to be in the #1 media market and get all those eyeballs which means cash in the bank.
The dynamics are still evolving. When UH got into the SWC there was no BCS/P5 and very limited TV. Heck, there was no ESPN, they were founded in 1979. So on field performance and butts in seats and did it benefit UT was of the utmost importance. Then in 1984 OU and Georgia filed lawsuits against the NCAA over the NCAA television plan. They won and college FB lost.
Then ESPN and other cable sports networks learned that sports could be packaged and sold as a product directly to individual fans who were willing to pay to watch the games on cable. College sports in particular became a way to make great profits.
When UH was left out of the BIG12 in 1994 when it was created, the Bowl Alliance was created to replace the Bowl Coalition and this led to the creation of the BCS in 1998. All of this was about grouping schools and creating separation between conferences. The sports media were promoting already developed brands that were the marque FB teams and now created saleable conferences to the industries that bought the ad time.
Now we have the P5 and the G5 that are packaged and sold to the advertisers who pay the big bucks to the sports media who then give a generous portion to the P5 conferences.
So, it is no longer about butts in seats, see the shrinking attendance that is in all college FB conferences, whether P5, G5, independent or the other levels of college FB. What it is now about is eyeballs, and not just eyeballs watching cable and free TV, but any number of electronic devices from PCâs to iphones and ipads.
The problem that UH has to overcome today is the ESPN/ABC/FOX/etc. already have them and convincing advertisers to pay more over many years to include UH into a P5. If I was at an negotiation table and someone said UH deserves to be included and here are the numbers, So what.
How many more viewers will watch UH vs Kansas, Duke, Northwestern, Indiana, Rutgers, etc. in FB than are presently watching UH play Memphis, Navy, UCF, USF, etc. Not to mention the occasional marquee OOC game involving UH vs Texas Tech, Arizona, Washington St., Oklahoma, etc.
Folks, its business and there unfortunately is no place for emotions in the sale of college FB teams to the advertisers.
Well you can do the same with Houston tooâŠweâd love to be used like thatâŠ
the same that watch Texas, Baylor, TT, Oregon, Missouri, or any P5 schools play the same schoolsâŠP5 wonât generate any more interest over weak P5sâŠ
Any school in the country can recruit HOUSTON without playing a game here. In fact, they do. The PAC doesnât need to add UH for recruiting and neither does the ACC.
The big 12 is not afraid of UH outrecruiting them. Otherwise TCU would not have been added and the DFW televisiĂłn and recruiting market was already dominated by the Big 12.
The Big 12 has no interest in us.
Our tv eyeballs is what will get us anywhere and we do decent to very good in that regard.
Houstonâs upside potential is much higher than TCUâs.
The whispers about TCUâs inclusion and Delossâ role in it at the end of his career and why ($$$) would explain somethings.
If that was so, we would have been addedâŠdid you not hear what the coaches were saying when they really felt we would be included a few years agoâŠ
We werenât included because their conference is
- Texas centric
- UT holds a grudge
- ESPN didnât want to pay
- 10 is working very well for them to get Into the playoffs
- Adding us doesnât increase the cable payout for in state rates
And who knows how many other reasons.
The coaches claiming we would steal their recruits were just playing lip service. We can only get x number of players to sign every year.
Notre Dame is not a true independent like BYU is. ND basketball and non-revenue sports compete in the ACC. ND football contractually has to schedule 5 ACC opponents every year and has to have scheduled every ACC team at least once by the middle part of the next decade.
True Independence is cumbersome no matter how big your fan base is. Scheduling is a pain for every sport considering you have no continuity like youâd have being a member of a conference.
Our market continues to reside on our campus. There are 45,000 students who need to bleed Cougar red.
If we can turn a graduating class into paying alumni each year, we will be planning to build a larger stadium regardless of the conference. Once we are averaging above the national average in our market, we will get picked up by someone. If not, we keep growing where we are.
In my opinion, the longer we are denied a spot in a P5, the MORE leverage we will have as our base continues to grow.
Of course, this is all predicated on dominating the AAC West on a yearly basis. Bad hires will slow the process.
Red80, I believe you are 100% correct. Until we can produce (pick a number) at least 25-30,000 season ticket holders that strongly
support UH, and demonstrate that to the greater Houston area and to the casual Houston fans, we are perpetuating the long held belief that UH just just doesnât have a viable P5 fan base. P5 conference biggies have maintained that as well in the past.
Beat Tulsa. 1-0.
Wiki told me it was formed in 1953, but I wasnât looking at the entry for the SEC specifically. I stand corrected.
You asked how many more viewers will watch U of H vs.the ones you mentioned or other P5 Teams I will add. Your answer is already registered. Our recent Nielsen ratings & others media numbers point out that U of H is bringing âeye ballsâ/customers. They were so good that they were even pointed out in the national media. So what is the REAL hangup?
You are right. There is no emotion when it comes to business. There is obviously some emotions at uta, ok, okie state and others when it comes to U of H getting into a P5. We are being blocked & it has nothing to do with what we bring financially to the table.
The Schools that I mentioned are counting that the PAC12 or ACC wonât invite us because we are too far. That is one of the reason why the BIG10 is a very viable option in case it does presents itself. Just think of the impact that it will have in Texas alone? This would have a devastating impact to the small12.
The big 10 is a viable option?
Where in the world have they expressed even the remotest of thoughts about including us?
pac 12 or bust
This Iâm down with. Four easy drive road trips, plus the Mrs would easily support trips to Boulder (hometown) and California.
He said âin case it does present itselfâ which I think means âin case they ask usâ. I have never liked the passive voice.
The original message didnât have that extra wording.
