Of all the victories, none was more personally gratifying to Pope than Oklahoma’s 17-14 win at Nebraska on Thanksgiving Day in 1972.

“That was probably the best game I played as a Sooner,” he said.

Matched up against Nebraska wide receiver Johnny Rogers — that year’s Heisman Trophy winner — in a nationally televised game, Pope had a pair of interceptions and helped the Sooners rally from a 14-0 halftime deficit to hand the Cornhuskers their first home defeat in three seasons.
