Memphis reportedly very upset @ Big 12 news

Feel bad for them. But, maybe a NY6 bowl win and a final four appearance, investments of millions in academics and athletics and a prior history in a major conference with some of these teams may have had something to do with the invite today.

I keep telling ya facilities facilities facilities. If UH hadn’t done all the upgrades they would have been left behind also. I mean some of the new stuff is on par w best in Country.

Edit: Memphis is still lacking in this part. Quite a bit. They’ll get there. UH was very proactive

I think the real answer, rather than facilities, is spending more generally. Coach salaries, marketing budgets, etc. are probably likewise just as important; nobody wants a conference partner that’s going to take their money and sit on it.

Everyone is in it for themselves now. Memphis is no different.

I definately feel bad for Memphis. We know how it feels to be left behind. I really hope that the next realignment gets them in. I will continue to follow the AAC. It was a good conference and I did not dislike any of the teams in it. I cannot say the same for the Big XII. But still glad we are in it.

Aside from lack of investment in on campus athletic facilities, Memphis’ real issue is academics. The school needs to improve on that end to be taken seriously.

The three schools selected by the Big12 are all have three things in common:

  1. Great on campus athletic facilities
  2. Great academics
  3. Strong alumni base.

Memphis is where UH was 20 years ago. Too many Memphians are Ole Miss or Tennessee fans.

Fred Smith, founder of FedEX, is a huge supporter of the school. If someone tells him what needs to be done to get them to the Big 12, he will get it done.

7thyear,
This is no arrogance on my part but I have felt their pain since the demise of the SWC. I wish them well going forward.

We were here in 1994, 2011, and 2016.

I feel their pain. They may be up next if the B12 expands to two more schools.

I liked the AAC as well. But I LOVE the University of Houston. We did what we thought was in our best interests.

HOWEVER we are now swimming in a pool of equal if not better competition from top to bottom.

We have got to get better. All of this good feeling will turn to ridicule and I told you so if we suck. It is mission critical that we don’t suck.

Memphis reminds me of UH when TCU joined the Big 12.

We were griping about it but did nothing but gripe. Now, we have new facilities just like TCU did.

Memphis plays in an old stadium that isn’t theirs and an arena used by the local pro team. In other words, no effort to build facilities, just griping

Sorry, not sorry about Memphis. We have 3 R2 schools in the Big12 but all three of them are respected for their undergrad academics. Memphis is a R2 school with very pedestrian academics. North Texas State has better academics than Memphis.

This! Hello.

Who cares they had a chance to invest money in their program and they did not.

I am for sure going to miss that game. I have some great memories playing Memphis
and one with a weird eye tick that pops up.

The Academic side is another one that’s keeping Memphis down

Edit: Basically “They’re all Shook Up” about it right now!

The big12 was not going to take more than three schools from the AAC, if that’s any consolation to Memphis. It would have left it a 7 member conference. A conference needs 8 members to continue as an FBS conference and there certain provision that relate to institutions needing to playing together for a specified number of years , that may not be mitigated by adding teams.

They prefer to invest their money in basketball recruits and still can’t make it to the dance. Hard to feel sorry for them, honestly.
