Men's Golf: 2023 Border Olympics

Men’s golf kicked off their Spring '23 campaign this past week in Laredo, Texas. In a field comprised of 17 teams, the Coogs came through with a great showing, including a team runner up and an individual champion for the second straight year!

Santiago De La Fuente was the tournament champion with an overall score of -4. De La Fuente had 3 straight rounds under par; 70 - 71 - 71 to win by 1 over Baylor’s Johnny Keefer.

The Coogs finished 2nd at +7, 15 shots behind the champion Baylor Bears at -8. Overall results are as follows:

  1. Baylor -8
  2. Houston +7
  3. Michigan +15
  4. ULM +16
  5. Coastal Carolina +17
  6. Wright State +21
  7. La Tech +24
  8. Sam Houston +25 (cue the tears from the SHSU diehards)
  9. NMSU +28
  10. Rice +29
  11. Illinois State +30
  12. Lamar + +43
  13. Bowling Green +45
  14. Miami University (Ohio) +46
  15. Western Carolina +46
  16. UT Rio Grande Valley +51
  17. Houston Christian +58

Overall, the Border Olympics had a weak field, similar to last year. Finishing second gave the Coogs a 15-1 record at the event (this is key for Regionals). Up next for the Coogs is a home town event, hosted by Rice, out at Westwood Golf Club. I’d encourage all of you (those who can) sneak out early from work and catch your Swingin’ Coogs in action!

Looks like they need a strong spring to make the NCAA tournament

They just need to keep playing well. They are well above .500.

They’ve also made Regionals 9 times in the last 11 years. They know what they’ve got to do. A strong start doesn’t hurt.

Hopefully a good showing at Rice prepares them for a tough field at the Cabo event.

Is Baylor ranked? Looks like they blew out the field

Yes - Baylor is ranked #21 now on Golfstat.
