Apple commits $30B to Broadcom for US-made chips LINK
- Apple has extended its custom chip partnership with Broadcom through 2031, keeping the longtime supplier on board for AI hardware even as the iPhone maker moves more of its component work in-house.
- The expanded agreement covers custom ASIC chips that can speed up AI workloads, and it appears Apple lacks the expertise to build these itself, which has prolonged its reliance on Broadcom.
- Apple reportedly wants advanced AI servers to train models and run inference for Siri by early 2027, using a chip codenamed Baltra, a supersized M5 Ultra headed to the next Mac Studio.
I own a 2009 Corolla, not a truck, but it’s still running. I’ll get another car when this one finally goes belly-up.
My son is selling his Toyota 4-Runner, which I originally bought in 2000, then gifted to him.
It has almost 300,000 miles. Still runs. A/C still works.
I paid little over $20,000 and he is selling for a few $thousand.
The 4-Runner cost a net of $18,000 to own for 26 years. Few repairs.

Good luck with that. They discontinued the FJ. Nissan discontinued the Xterra 11 years ago which is why I still have mine. That 4 wheel drive body on chassis is badass. There is also another side to this where (at least in the short to mid term), stuff may get more expensive to make this happen.
When trade policy starts driving business decisions instead of economics alone, weird things can happen.
That last graph is very concerning. Looks like recent peak was Nov 2024 and been all
downhill since then. You would expect manufacturing construction spending to precede manufacturing employment , but the spending is not there thru May 2026. Zooming in for clarity…

a new KPMG surveyopens in a new tab finds four in 10 manufacturers have moved production to the U.S. or are considering doing so
Considering a move doesn’t mean they will move or even have a timeline to move soon, so I won’t get too excited about that yet.
The survey of 275 manufacturers finds that 57 per cent say they have paused, reduced or cancelled capital expenditure projects due to economic uncertainty and trade and tariff threats, while 42 per cent have scaled back or paused research and development spending. More than half (52 per cent) say they are currently operating in “endurance mode.”
I’d say that’s more concerning.
