Just a heads up. If you walk past a tree one is nesting in, chances are you’ll get dive bombed.
If you see den walking around his neighborhood with a helmet on, you know why. ![]()
BRO! I just want to walk to the office or go on a run in peace. Not deal with these arsehole birds.
I hate mockingbird nesting season so much.
When younger, we had an outside cat. Mockingbirds terrorized that poor cat, he refused to go outside any more and he became an inside cat. They are relentless!
The sky is falling! ![]()
Cowboy hats help
Finally, a good use for a pickleball racquet…
All birds are pricks, and would kill us if given a chance.

Blue jays can be the same thing. Used to divebomb our cat and peck his head.
It would be a sin to kill a mockingbird.
— Atticus Finch
A venial sin maybe.
. Unless a game warden catches you.
A blue jay once targeted the exact same spot on my family’s cat years ago. The cat had a half inch diameter crater on the top of it’s head.
Mockingbirds are pricks and it is nesting season
Phooey. Only angels and saints get to hear celestial music, so God sent mockingbirds as consolation. May their numbers increase.
Yes sir! 100
I have several who call my green acre home.
We have a Carolina Wren family living in a large plant pot in the back patio
Beautiful little song birds and not aggressive at all
So cool to watch the little guys grow
Blue Jays are important. When you see them dying for no reason, it means you have West Nile Mosquitos afoot
Useful fact to know; as I read this, crows and ravens are also
potential indicators.
dead blue jays are a strong indicator of West Nile virus (WNV) activity in an area. Blue jays belong to the corvid family (which also includes crows and ravens) and are highly susceptible to the virus. Because they often get sick and die rapidly after infection, they serve as an early warning system for local health departments. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Keep in mind the following when dealing with a dead blue jay:
- Do Not Touch: Never handle a dead bird with your bare hands, as they can carry other diseases or parasites. Use a shovel or invert a plastic bag over your hand to dispose of it.
- Report to Authorities: Because dead birds signal that the virus is circulating locally, local vector control or public health departments track these sightings. Reporting them helps officials evaluate mosquito control measures in your neighborhood.
- Local Reporting: If you are in the Houston area, you can contact the Harris County Public Health Mosquito & Vector Control Division to check if they are actively collecting dead birds or to report your sighting
But Blue Jays are rather aggressive nevertheless.
Ravens & Crows tend to show up in the fall, blue jays in the spring.
