NIL gets good players but you still need a decent coach.
yepâŠLAW doesnât get it.
WE were literally 2-3 NIL offensive player acquisitions away from playing in the Conference Championship Game this weekend.
And many of those holes COULD HAVE been fixed had we hired a coach + star players package deal.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX with how we wisely use our funds!
The Big 12 was winnable and so was a playoff spot!
We don;t have to be the # 1 NIL squad int he country we need to use our corporate NIL pot to keep the nucleus + augment the roster with select NIL acquisitions.
And I know you poo poo the basketball classâŠbut that is a HUGE deal. Those other schools are still throwing huge NIL $$$ at those recruits and we ARE BEATING THEM!
While I agree with most of what you said. Not producing championship seasons hasnât deterred aggy donors to not keep pumping $ into their program.
UhhhhhâŠcome on now.
It takes more than that amount of players to field a top 15 football team.
Ed Oliverâs teams didnât finish in the Top 15.
Where is NIL powerhouse Oregon finishing, by contrast?
So based on thatâŠIâd say that YOU donât get it.
1-3 blue chippers can produce a Top 15 basketball team.
It takes more than that in football.
We donât have that kind of NIL doughâŠthat does not appear to be changingâŠand itâs NOT happening before our very eyes.
Those are all INCORRECT assertions on your part.
we only had to win the Big 12.
NEITHER Iowa State or Arizona State are top 15 so you are even WRONG on that one
Sure about that?
Weâll see if either finishes in the Top Ten.
Is any school that isnât a big NIL school currently in it?
They donât need a huge NIL collective because they have Phil Knight.
Heâll buy them whatever they need.
Same with SMUâs oil barrons.
do you know how rich and powerful UH alums are?
We have CEOs all over the placeâŠhigh powered lawyersâŠeven the last two Mayors of Houston were Coogs!
I think both of you have valid and invalid opinions
Those alums are all old no offense
And againâŠhow many of them care enough about UH sports to where they will fund the NIL honeypot sufficiently?
Hint: so farâŠHARDLY ANY.
Remember it takes TWO things:
a) rich alums and donors, that
b) care enough about sports to fund the NIL honeypot sufficiently.
Even if UH has a, which is debatable, itâs pretty obvious that we donât have b.
Stanford has a, but NOT b.
And in footballâŠthatâs BIG. Itâs big in basketball too, but again, in basketball, you only need 1-3 players per year.
Tilman is the chair of the board. How much money is he worth?
Billions.
Heâll need to pay for players to come to UH the way that UT and SMUâs rich benefactors do in order for us to remain at an elite football level.
I donât see it happening thus far.
Weâre literally about to sink close to $10m into a basketball roster next year. To think we canât do that for football is silly.
yesâŠold have A LOT of money to donate
8 Billion?
Except that a) it hasnât happened, b) doesnât appear to be happening, and c) againâŠit takes more than 1-3 recruits like that to have an elite football team.
Wake me up when we have comparable money to pay a football team at the Oregon or UT level.
Having enough money to buy a 1-3 person basketball recruiting class is nowhere near the same as having the money to buy a Top Ten football recruiting class of 20+.
Tilman has enough to write a $25m check annually. And that would be more than what Ohio State used to fund their team this year.
But, yes. He has to want to do that.
And I havenât even mentioned Mattress Mack yet. Who is funding a lot of this basketball NIL.
And therein lies the problem.
As you said, and as Iâve ALWAYS said, you need a) a lot of rich donors, AND b) they have to care enough about sports to fill the NIL honeypot sufficiently to pay 20+ top football recruits per year.
Isnât happening, and thereâs little to suggest that that will change.
Tilman isnât paying enough NIL to provide that.
Weâll see if that changes in the future, but Iâm not terribly optimistic.
