New DC/ILB, OL, and OLB coach

I wonder who turned us down and how much money we had to offer. Gibbs makes $550K at Tech. That said, I believe Gibbs’ D was ranked last in FBS last year.

Based on his part in Temple’s resurgence and improvement at Miami in the early years, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Seems like Applewhite likes the cerebral types, like CTH does.

the ONLY guy who likely turned us down was Shannon…we needed to act and we did…

Evert 2 years. Well, at least he’s still on schedule.

My thought exactly. Seemed like we were ready to move on as soon as Shannon was promoted.

This is a bad hire. As a new HC, CMA hires a canned defensive coordinator off the streets with a record so bad, that he is nicknamed "coach No D"
Does not make sense any way you look at it. What is he thinking ?
No way he should hitch his wagon to this horse…

All the talk about the defense in this thread, the OL coach we hired could be really good. Really liking the offensive staff we’ve put together. Hopefully it translates on the field next year.

I just hope all the negative BS on our boards doesn’t sour our current players or scare off recruits.

Looking up D’Onofrio and scheme, ran across some articles that may help explain some things:

Two former Miami Hurricanes defenders say problem is players, not Mark D’Onofrio

“It’s a great system to be in. He runs a lot of zone, switches it up and also runs a lot of man, and has a lot of nice blitz packages. It’s similar to a lot of the stuff run up here with the Steelers. It’s hard to say it’s his fault. The coaches [have] to coach and the players [have] to play.”

Miami Hurricanes come to the defense of Mark D’Onofrio

“Coach D is one of the best football minds I’ve been around,” Chickillo said. “He probably is the best football mind. His football IQ is unbelievable, and he puts us in the right position to make plays. People just have to make them.”

Said Perryman: “It’s not coach, man. I ain’t going to lie. I try to ignore the outside noise, but when I hear stuff like that it bothers me a lot. It’s not coach, you know. Coach D’Onofrio does a great job putting us in the best [positions] and the best situations where we need to be. It’s just up to us to execute. We had a lot of freelancing going on.”

Golden discusses defensive philosophy, other notes from Tuesday (w/video)

“There’s never a day where we ever talk about read and react. That’s not even a mention,” Golden said. “Depending where you are on a defense you have a key and have to respond. That’s defense. We want to be a 3-4 because a 3-4 lets you get more speed at linebacker, get in and out of over and under fronts. It allows you to play with four down or go to an odd front, allows you to have speed, allows you to attack more. Interceptions are up, takeaways are up, sacks are up. All that’s up, but it’s not good enough. So we have to continue to build it. We have to continue to build our depth, continue to develop kids. Obviously we want to attack, want to be a dynamic defense, a defense that can fly around and disrupt the passer and get tackles for loss. Otherwise you don’t want to be in that configuration. Again, it hasn’t been good enough. I want to own the fact it hasn’t been good enough the last couple of weeks.”

Amid criticism, UM explains its defensive approach, makes slight changes; Dolphins, Heat, Marlins chatter

By most any statistical measure, UM’s maligned defense improved last season, rising to 14th among 128 FBS schools in yards allowed per game (329.6) and 36th in points permitted (24.3).

Yet former players and others continue to criticize coordinator Mark D’Onofrio because of schemes and philosophy.

It will reduce season ticket sales for sure.

People need to quit whining and get on board. The school hired the best coaching staff they could. Let’s see what kind of recruiting class the staff can put together over the next month if y’all stop acting like little girls.

Hey how about that O-Line hire?!

Like I mentioned earlier I am all for supporting him. A year off can be a very good thing. Football players are not machine I am just hoping for a smooth transition and a smack in the face defense.
No disrespect to our previous DC but we have got to do a better job stopping air raid offenses. The AAC and the small12 are similar in that regard.
All I want is for the first time in a very long time is to see a dominating Team on offense and defense. Are you with me?

Here is a thought, he has experience against the triple option.

could you elaborate on this key fact?? success?? previous scores and opponents?? Orlando’s major failing was complete inability to stop Navy’s offense…Am hoping coach D can do better.

Orlando is awesome (OU and Louisville wins, etc.). But in fairness he had at least 7 guys that have NFL talent. And we still gave up tons of points to Navy, Tulsa, SMU, and Memphis.

A lot of factors contribute to defensive stats.

So… 2015 didn’t happen?!?

It’s a great point. Let’s look at 2015 and 2016 from a non partisan point of view. We had major defensive issues with similar teams in both seasons. It is going to be fascinating to see/compare on how we will fare against these offenses with our new DC.
