2015 was Tony’s and Gibbs’ recruits. haha
Are you REALLY that dumb??? Navy went up and down the field all day and scored 31 points…We won because we outscored them…
Navy didn’t adapt. Our defense did better in 2016 than 2015.
Is that the level of your football analysis?
It feels like the Billion Dollar Buyer went cheap with this set of coaches. I compare that with USF’s staff (Gilbert/Mattox/Strong) and our pay two years ago with lower revenues (seemed about the same cost w/ lower revenues). BTW, Fleck got $3.5M avg pay at Minnesota but they have lots of auxiliary funds.
dont use the Navy game as any example of Orlando’s coaching acumen…you just look foolish…
and he all kinds of problems with Memphis both years as well…
I am the one who looks foolish after you stated we outscored them to win?
we gained 550 yards and scored 57 points…they gained 450 yards and scored 31 points…FEEL free to categorize that as a great defensive victory…NAVY punted twice the entire game…If we hadnt been dominant on the offensive side of the ball, they would have kicked our butts…
We really couldn’t stop them in either season. We did make them get out of their game plan and throw in '15 but they completed most everything. It really was the offense that won that game
If our season tickets drop because our uneducated fan base doesn’t like a staff hire…That is really pathetic.
Two things on the the DC hire:
- If he is so bad, how did he put so many guys into the NFL at Temple
- Did the dark cloud of the Nevin Shapiro scandal neuter the ability to recruit from 2011-20xx since they had self imposed bowl bans (couldn’t play in ACC title game) and limited scholarships. This could not have helped against in conference rivals Clemson and FSU who already have better facilities and resources. Didn’t this hurt us in the SWC? Would explain the team’s decline during this period.
From ESPN:
Miami had already self-imposed bowl bans over the last two years, keeping the Hurricanes out of the ACC title game in 2012 as well. Those self-imposed sanctions, along with cooperation during the prolonged NCAA investigation into widespread allegations, helped Miami avoid major penalties.
UM also had minimized how many football scholarships they offered this past year in a strategic move, but athletic director Blake James said it’s unclear how – if at all – that will be taken into consideration by the NCAA as it relates to the scholarship reductions.
The biggest difference between 2015 and 2016 on defense was forcing turnovers. Part of that was lack of a pass rush and the other part was the loss of an excellent collection of ball hawking DBs. Bowser being out was huge.
To be fair, the Louisville game was the best single game defensive performance in all of CFB this season.
Bowser missing time and Herman looking around hurt the whole team.
Not having Taylor against Navy this year hurt too. If Herman knew he had one foot out the door why suspend him and cost us a game (we were already short Bowser).
As for the new DC, I’m sure he’ll take a look at the talent we have and adjust his scheme around it. With no Taylor and Bowser this coming year we’re going to need someone to step up to give us an outside rush. Should be very interesting to see how the system and players develop. On both sides of the ball. I’m very excited.
Orlando was a coup. Anyone who followed college football knew about him and Utah St. The guy we just hired is a reach…a big reach
Wonder why he was stuck at Utah St? He was truly a coup.
You aren’t helping yourself with this argument. 31 points is basically one touchdown per quarter. Not to mention we had 57 points, so our Defense was out there quite a bit. Your defensive stats depend on the flow of the game. You are trying really hard to bring Orlando down, but just not buying it. Navy is going to get yards. It’s the triple option for crying out loud. You score 57 and are out on the field as much as we were and hold them to 31, that’s good. Not to mention Navy only had 148 rushing yards and was 4 of 14 on third down. We shut them down in the running game. They had 300 passing yards. So what… The first three quarters they had 7, 7, and 3. They scored two in fourth. You hold Navy to under 200 yards rushing, that’s a good game. Wait, that’s a great game. They averaged 323 yads rushing per game that year. Sure they passed on us some, but football is a give and take game.
Maybe this year we should have focused on stopping the run and let them pass if they want. It worked last year, it worked against Florida State, it worked against Oklahoma, and it worked against Louisville. Sure Navy is tough, but so are we, and our scheme was pretty soft on the run that game, almost like we thought we were playing SMU and a spread offense.
I remember both games well. The difference it seemed were:
- We missed some very experienced DB’s who the previous year disrupted the triple option.
- We missed both one of our best DE and LB who could have made a big difference in containment.
- Navy had a WR (#2) that consistently turned the corner on us. We could not contain him.
- Their QB took every shot we gave him and still made yardage. We would hit him at the line of scrimmage and he would still make 3 or 4 yds.
- We were playing on a wet field.
Again, injuries happen with every program. The fact is that we struggled this season against the same Teams that we struggled last season That is the only “knock” that I have had with Coach Orlando.
Enough with Navy we lost four times that is a fact. Do you all think that in fifty years people will remember that we were missing a DB or a DE?
We had some key wins but we had some horrible losses you can’t see things one way. Football is not romantic. It is about dominating. We/I have to be objective. A dominant defense does not lose four games. We can all argue on this but our record speaks for itself. There is no ifs or buts. We have to get better, period and that starts with our new Team.
I would have loved to see Coach Orlando become our HC. It did not happen. Let’s support our new DC. First and foremost I want to see a defense that DOMINATES our rivals. We play in the AAC. We have to dominate it. Dominate it to a point that we make a statement when we play a P5 Team. The best way for people to remember us is to make a statement week after week. We got kicked out by the P5? Smash every Team that comes our way. That will make the headlights. When did you see a great offense that had a great defense? That is what I want to see. That is why we have to be 100% behind our Team 100% of the time.
