Stem cell transplants are no joke. The chemo they give before the transplant has a half life of around 30 minutes but in that short time destroys your bone marrow. Your body loses its ability to produce any blood cells, and you are dependent on transfusions until your body starts producing blood cells again (usually 2-4 weeks). It also wreaks havoc on all the soft tissue in your GI tract. You’re in the hospital for a month and have to stay within 30 minutes of the hospital for 1-3 months after you’re released.

My wife had one, and it took her a full year to get back to her pre-transplant energy levels. It was a year of hell, full of infections and constant ER visits and hospitalizations. Some of the side effects never go away.

I’m glad to hear this young man is “cured”. I hope it is a permanent cure, or at least very long lasting. I hope he never has to endure his pain again.

Quite an achievement.
