North Carolina and Louisiana have enacted laws to increase state gambling taxes, which will help fund NIL at D1 schools in their states.
Could NIL funding be the rationale to help get sportsbooks and casino gambling past the finish line in Texas? Or is the anti-gambling establishment too strong?
This seems to impugn the “integrity of the sport.”
People who want to gamble are going to whether it is legal or not. Texans have been going to Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico forever. I have had friends using bookies since I was in high school in the 70s. Our heads in the sand state politicians should legalize it and tax it. I had a friend who worked at Sam Houston race Park a number of years back. When Penn national was negotiating to buy Sam Houston, they were promised that casino gambling would be put on the ballot to be voted on. They never would have purchased Sam Houston if they had not been given those assurances. Obviously they were lied to. I am sick of the powers that be keeping it off the ballot. If Penn national was able to put a casino on the property at Sam Houston, I think our track would be a major player in horse racing. We will never know as the long as we allow the religious right sector to a control our state politics on this issue. .
I live in Washington. We legalized weed over a decade ago, with the logic that it would be better to tax the heck out of it and fund the schools with the revenue. Because credit card companies didn’t want to touch weed sales due to federal regulations, it remained mostly a cash business, which meant a lot of sales went underreported and taxes undercollected. Now the state has been suing itself in the millions for continually under funding the schools. Other drug problems have dramatically increased and, like San Francisco, residents and businesses move out of Seattle largely due to homeless issues that have exploded in that time.
I’m not convinced that sin taxes are winning propositions.
Yup. Marijuana is considered a federal crime. No access to bank. Legalization must be made at yhe federal level.
