Here is a video of every pass by Tune in the UCF game.
Main takeaways:
Offensive line must improve, Tune was running for his life half of his drop backs.
Tune must get smarter and more efficient. Way too many bad passes, and he’s very lucky he only threw 1int this game because it could have been like 3-4.
Holy cow our WRs dropped a lot of passes, I mean they weren’t doing Tune any favors.
The play calling is really really bad at times. I’m like wow I can’t believe we just called that. There are several plays that make no sense to me. On one play we ran a WR screen to Dell, against 2 defenders with 1 blocker, and we ran it to the short hash mark. Like what in gods name are we thinking? We did it a couple of other times where we ran a screen to an RB to the short side of the field, like the whole points of screens are to get guys in open space.
I don’t want this to turn into another Anti-Dana or Tune thread so let’s focus on what we can do to get better. My question to you guys is what are the key things that can fix out offensive issues?
For me it starts with:
Offensive line obviously has to get better. I think we can all agree that we should have at least a solid starting 5 based on what the coaches have said.
Tune needs to take off more. Like he is a damn good running QB. I’m not saying he has to go full King mode, but no reason he shouldn’t take off 6-10 times a game. He’s very fast for a QB and it’s an easy way to get positive plays. It will also help in the redzone.
The whole offense needs to be smarter. Not just tune, we have to be more discipline as a whole. Too many penalties and turnovers. We can’t play against ourselves and the defense
Get more creative on offense. I think Dana believes in Tune. And I do too. It’s time he starts showing more trust in him. This play calling is way too reserved. We need more movement before snaps. More creative run plays, include WRs in run game like Dell. And for the love of god can our WRs run more than 2 routes lol. All our WRs run are comeback routes or go routes it’s so predictable.
I think it’s going to be a lot better year for us on the offensive end. We have much more talent, chemistry, and experience. What do you guys think are the biggest things we need to work on to fix our offensive woes? (Again please don’t turn this into a anti-Dana and tune thread)
I watched the video and thought he made some pretty good throws in the short and medium routes. We are missing some of the home run balls over the top. I hope he gets time this year and we have a running game. Need to get that swagger back on offense.
The chemistry with WRs was not great. Dell was new. Singleton and Stevenson were hurt. But with another year with Dell. Christian, Bryson, and Singleton have all been with tune for 3 years. Adding Carter and Erwin, I think we are a lot better and deeper at pass catching. Should help spread the field a bit more. But you are right about the run game, that helps a lot, when you are down, everyone can just playoff and play safe.
Tune is a very poor deep ball thrower. His accuracy on the long ball is terrible.
Outside of that, his o-line was so bad that it is difficult to judge him on much else. If we also had any kind of a running game, it would help out the QB so much.
Tune has a lot of the measurables - size, arm strength, mobility - I just wish he could get some time when he drops back and learn to throw a deep ball that is a real threat.
I wouldn’t mind being more Methodical and eating up the clock. Spread the offense. A lot of short to medium throws, run the ball a lot, have your QB use his legs. Could be a recipe for success
Thanks for putting that together. Dana is not going to let Tune run around. Tune has a hammy issue and if he pulls it again, the season and Dana’s tenure here will be kaput.
I’m not saying be King, but running as a QB makes the defense honest, just another thing they have to worry about. Also it’s basically almost always a positive play. Tune has worked really hard on his body, he looks like an absolute beats now. Plus running for 5 yards is better than a sack or int lol
I agree here. DH is not going to let Tune run much if at all really based on Tune’s injury history, the reliance on Tune in a critical year with no clear backup ready to step in, and DH’s history of wanting his QBs in the pocket. We will need the OL play to really improve. This will then in large part help improve Tune’s game (especially and hopefully fewer turnovers and more explosive plays and TDs). Won’t hurt to get better playcalling and less dropped passes. Basically the O should be generally improved because there are so many areas they need to improve- so many opportunities are there to get better. D should be solid. 8+ wins this year.
Saw a lot where Tune turned into the defender and that created the pressure. Got a little bit of the happy feet.
Had some good throws and a few terrible ones.
I agree that we should go uptempo. They seem to get more rhythm that way. Don’t worry about running clock, just put up points.
Yeah he can get anxious at times, creates pressure that’s not even there. But that’s what happens when you don’t have a whole lot of reps and preparation+ bad o line.
i just watched th full clips…
a few counter takes to yours…
no one here is going to agree, but i dont think our Oline was that bad comparative to other UH olines…we dont have an elite Oline, but we have never had an elite Oline in the modern era… there were 45+ plays in that video, there was only 1 bad collapse, which was at the start of the game, (note there a couple “others” but all the others seemed intentional, and meant to be a screens) …tune could have avoided his other sacks with better pocket movement. we’ve never had a UH qb have years in the pocket. Our success has been getting it out quick, or running through the gaps in their blitz
there were only 2 notable drops in the video, having a db knock the ball out of your hands while you are in double coverage isnt a “drop” its a pass breakup… you said they werent doing tune any favors, the reality is that tune wasnt doing them any favors throwing it to a ton of heavily covered WRs
im not a fan of our playcalling but this video wont highlight it, dana continuously calls run plays even if it isnt working …also the predictability… they might have seen through every screen in that clip
dana has made it clear he doesnt want tune running and will try to minimize that part…expecting “more” running is unlikely
i think tune is a decent deep ball passer, but for this specific game he wasnt remotely close on any deep passes, was off by 5yds on all of them…
this video highlighted what ive said about tune before, there isnt a double covered WR Tune doesnt think he can thread the needle on, he is gambler on his passes, even though most of his success came from taking the safe passes …people talk about the running being the difference between king and tune but i think it was this, king NEVER took risky passes, 1on1 or open or he wasnt throwing you the ball… improving the decision making and reducing risk is where i think he can grow the most
i think for the offense to thrive under dana, the run game needs to have success because he has made it clear he isnt going to abandon the run even if it isnt working… we need a wr to step up with Stevenson gone…play calling needs a bit more unpredictability IMO
Lmao ironically I actually agree . I just think with the QB we have, we are going to have to get better, the o line needs to help tune. But Tune also needs to help the oline
I’m not saying he needs to be king, or we need a whole bunch of design QB runs. I’m saying Tune should look to gain more yards from running. He’s a very good runner for a QB. It would keep the defense honest, make more positive plays, and prevent less sacks and TOs. We have too many 3rd and long plays. When you watch the video you see that Tunes running was a big part of our chunk plays. You can be smart about it, he does not have to take a whole bunch of hits, sliding and going out of bounds if perfectly fine. Just seems like every time Tune runs it’s for positive yards.
Funny because Kopp has all the tools except some accuracy issues on slant/medium passes. Other than that, he looks great (he’s only 18 and will improve). His deep ball looks nice.
With 10:45 left in the game we were leading 27-21.
Tune looked very good. He did hit deep throws and Trajan was a monster. No one can consistently cover him.
Our defense collapsed. It was sad most of the game and in the 4th quarter it was embarrassing.
BYU upped their blitzes and our OL collapsed in the 4th quarter.
To me improving the Defense will reap more dividends than will worrying about Tune. And,yes, Tune can run and can run very well.
I also watched our 2015 Memphis game. So you know what Tune really needs? DeMarcus Ayers. That guy was incredible! Better than Stevenson, better than any receiver we have seen since then.
We have long-standing recruiting issues at the WR position. And think back to Case Keenum’s group. Did he have some real studs to throw to?
Both Sumlin and Levine signed some real talent at WR. Since then not so much.
I remember Derek telling us after the BYU game that in the second half, BYU was pulling some NFL moves on offense. Plays they had not come up against before. Kind of had them running in circles on defense.
