I think youâre looking at this from a sports fairness perspective, but ultimately, this will be judged from a financial perspective.
For the vast majority of players trying to come back, NIL money will be the largest payouts they ever receive (or theyâd be in the NBA already). For most, weâre talking about choosing between a $65K job and $600K in NIL. For the top players, it could be $4M in NIL versus a $300K overseas contract.
The argument will be that the NCAA itself has essentially decided players should get 5 years to financially benefit from college athletics. So why should someone get only 4 years simply because they were good enough to play immediately instead of redshirting? Why should someone born in 2004 get one fewer year to financially provide for their family than someone born in 2005?
They obviously have to draw a line somewhere. theyâll argue the line should come after this group, guys who are already 6+ years removed and wouldnât qualify for 5-for-5 anyway if it had started any year
On the sports side, though, I 100% agree with you. A lot of young players are going to lose opportunities because of this. Look at Harwell at Gonzaga. 4 weeks ago, he looked locked in as a starter. Now Gonzaga is expected to bring in 4 new guys, and he may have to fight just to stay in the rotation.
That absolutely sucks for younger players. But I donât think this will ultimately be judged on competitive fairness. Itâll be judged financially, and those younger players are still getting paid.

I think heâs one of those guys that should have stayed and allowed himself to be developed like a Jamal or Marcus.
No doubt if he wouldâve done that, he wouldâve been a lottery pick. And he still might be. Under the new rules he has three more years.
But, heâs definitely one of those guys that wouldâve been a monster under Sampson for four years

Offcourse⊠his defense was already amazing ⊠his shot and ball handling needed work
But he shot 40% from 3 at super high volume in high school (but context is the high school 3 is shorter)
Worst case weâd have been debating him as he best defender in college basketball if he was here as a senior (with limited offense)
most likely case we improve his offense enough to be a dominant 3&D
With a high chance we grimes him⊠and break him out to be a star
he might come back too⊠he has 5 years of eligibility, if he gives up on being a early draft pick, Iâd welcome him back if he wanted to transfer back

Eligibility rules do not exist to maximize athletesâ revenues, and courts donât evaluate them in that manner (or they shouldnât). If this portion of the rule is deemed unenforceable, then none of their rules are enforceable, including age limits or number of years played.
Itâs a ridiculous argument that theyâre somehow harmed by being subject to the same rules in effect when they started and finished school. You canât lose what you never had.

This is exactly what has happened in college baseball, and itâs driven more by the portal than NIL. DI and DII coaches are barely looking at HS players nowadays.,

Fact: Dude was supposed to be a McDonaldâs All-American who played for us like he ate all the McDonaldâs before every game⊠
And I donât believe that he didnât do something off court to get benched⊠because if his defense was as good as you claim it was AND his attitude was still good, meaning he was still showing 100% effort in practice & being a good teammate, then he wouldnât have went from ~15 mpg to mop up minutes only⊠my opinion is he quit on the team because he was having a TERRIBLE offensive season⊠TERRIBLE.

his benching came after back to back to back losses ⊠after big losses we make lineup changes⊠it was at harwellâs expense
after really bad losses (blowouts) or consecutive loses we change te lineup in some way⊠it has nothing to be with his attitude or off the court
or was it a coincidence to you he was getting ~18mins per right before the losses, to ~5min per immediately after the losses
i 100% stand by he didnt quit⊠i said this mid season⊠he was a mcdAA, that was removed from rotation⊠the highest 5star to not start, he wasnt even in the rotation⊠but he cheered for the team loudly and proudly after he was benched⊠that is alot of humility for someone in his position

I donât believe something off court didnât happen but we donât have any proof either way so all thatâs left is to argue with you about it because neither one of us can prove there was, or wasnât, an off the court issue.

3 straight lossesâŠ
we changed rotation for singular losses before⊠chaney was removed from the startting line up for carlton after the bama loss
greshmen was removed from the starting lineup (25mins per) to about 10 mins a game after we had 2 losses also âright before the conference tourneyâ
cedrick alley went from 35 mins a game starting to like 13 mins a game after the temple loss
there is a long documented history of us benching defensive player with limited offense after big losses for more offensive players
But none of those examples went to mop up time after the benching, interesting
