Since the Pez dispense thread is hijacked with this stuff, use this!
Cullen and Bauer have raised their admit standards for both first year and transfer. It’s getting hard. The CompSci department needs a standards raise as it’s getting PACKED. Though the talent is getting higher. (I’ll talk more about that soon, on vacation right now)
What is Cullen and Bauer’s admission stats now? I’m curious how much more selective it’s become.
There’s something that UT and other selective public universities do that I think UH can do incrementally.
Make high demand majors within those colleges super selective with the goal of making them nationally attractive. Those who couldn’t get into those programs, shift them towards liberal arts with the option to get into those high-demand majors after a year or two perquisite coursework.
UT does something similar as do other major public universities in the country.
Back in the early 90’s there were some attractive women in the marketing program. Way back when my motivation was much more prurient.
What I disliked was folks in business attire at school heading to their jobs and internships after. But, i figured if mccombs has their “look” then we should, too.
3.9/4.0 for auto admit for freshman and 3.25 across all college work for transfers. The lower your HS GPA is for first years the higher your SAT/ACT needs to be.
We had 1 person that made it into Wall Street. Specifically, Morgan Stanley. We haven’t had a Bauer-grown Banker in years from what I was told at that point. (and I’m talking about Investment Banking. Not Wealth Management, Research, or any back office roles.)
From what I understand… the last few years Bauer has been sending a handful to Wall Street regularly. Bauer is growing.
For example, University of Texas has roughly the same racial demographic as University of Houston. Perhaps a slightly higher white demographic.
That being said, McCombs, Cockrell and Computer Science, all happen to have much higher percentage of white and asian students as compared to their lower-ranked schools such as Liberal Arts or History (these disciplines are typically higher ranked within the Ivy Leagues and Mini-Ivies.)
Bauer is still very racial diversed, and that’s largely because the school still accepts a ton of transfers from community college. UT-McCombs accepts an extremely low number of transfer students.
I’m not trying to start a conversation on race, but my point is that those white students are more than likely from private schools or higher-ranked public schools if not out-of-state.
Back in the 70s U of H would accept almost anyone. I know, they accepted me. It’s good to see the standards elevated, but at the end of the day college is a place where you grow. High school did not make a lot of sense to me, but college was amazing. I think there should be avenues for late bloomers. I’m 65 now. Other than my wife, U of H was the best thing that ever happened to me.
Having a Houston zip code should give you a nudge in any era. Always look after your community, because that student is likely to remain in Houston post grad
