OT: Clemson Accuses Mississippi of Tampering

If what is being reported is accurate, the NCAA needs to come down hard on Mississippi, and especially HC Pete Golding. According to the article, Clemson HC Dabo Sweeney let Mississippi know that Clemson knew that Mississippi was inappropriately contacting LB Luke Ferrelli after he signed with Clemson, even citing a text Golding sent to Ferrelli stating “I know you’re signed, but what is your buyout?"

The article states that Sweeney requested from Ferrelli’s agent copies of the correspondence between Mississippi and Ferrelli, and Ferrelli’s agent offered the correspondence "if Clemson were to add a second year at $1 million to the already agreed-upon deal with Luke, then they would gladly give us whatever we need to turn Ole Miss in.” Sweeney refused.

If Sweeney has documentation that is alleged in the article, I hope Mississippi gets hammered by the NCAA.

Hey NCAA. College football is watching…

LOL that the ncaa is going to do anything. The power conferences are just allowing the ncaa to exist. They come down hard or come down on anything and SECAA is born. The conferences have the power. How else are nba players coming back to college and lawsuits are being filed for 6 and 7 year players.

Thank you for posting. I love this because it is relevant and it exposes how ludicrous the ncaa is.
I will take that back if the ncaa does the right thing and HAMMERS mississippi.
Let’s keep an eye on this one. The nfl is very specific with tampering.

It is highly unlikely that the NCAA will do anything, because it can’t.

If the NCAA were to step in and try to stop it, then Ole Miss and the player in question would actually have standing to sue under anti-trust law, as an attempt to stop a player from making more money could constitute an illegal restraint of trade, specifically collusion. MLB was sued (and lost) a major case over this sort of thing a few decades ago.

Clemson may be able to sue under a breach of contract claim. Of course we would need to see the terms of the agreement in question between Clemson and the player, but unless it states specifically that he is locked down for two years, has clawbacks and buyouts in it, and other protections, then Clemson would be SOL.

Dabo’s actions thinks he has a case. It will be great to follow.

I would love for it to happen. Let’s see if they have the cojones to do so.

Will be interesting to see.

Of course then the question becomes, what happens if he wins?

That is what you have to ask.

Assuming there is a case, it could take years. It they request that the player in question be barred from playing for anyone else, then he would in theory win, but would he really? What if the dude comes back and plays like garbage? What if he purposefully sabotages games? What if Dabo decides he doesn’t want to play him because he doesn’t trust him? That doesn’t even take into consideration the impact that this suit would have on future players that are considering where to play. Would agents steer players away from Dabo? South Carolina would have a field day with this.

It’s a very a hairy situation.

If there is tampering the ncaa has no choice but to come hard on them. It will be interesting on how it turns out. Dabo is in his rights.

The bama kid for basketball got a quick restraining order to allow him to play. I think if this happens and it goes to court it will resolved long after these coaches are fired, replaced, and the players have moved on.

But at the end of the day I would be willing to bet nothing comes of this at all.

My first thought.

I suspect the NCAA might act on this one since 1. It involves Clemson, and 2. Other regional SEC teams like Bama, Auburn, MSU, etc stand to benefit from from Mississippi getting in trouble with the NCAA, similar to how UH always ended up in trouble when they were in the SWC.

Every time a player enters the portal with a do not contact tag, there has been tampering.

Fresno St. is now accusing Mississippi of tampering. According to the tweet, Fresno St’s WR Josiah Freeman has screenshots of the illegal communication. We need to hear Mississippi’s side of the story, but on the surface, it is not looking good for Mississippi and Pete Golding.

Starting to see a lot of fingers pointed at those Ole Miss people…hmmm. Not looking good.
