OT: Fertitta buys WNBA Team

There is a false equivalent by the fans that the bigger Fertitta’s empire gets, the more likely he donates big $$$ to UH athletics. Fertitta picks and chooses his donations. One thing he does not want is for UH to treat him like a bank.

I think most major sports owners make a lot on franchise value. But I don’t know if that applies to wnba or wmls.

If valpo is right then that explains it. Damn, 500 million. That’s like forgive-able covid business loan windfall stuff.

We’re getting the SuperSonics AND the Houston Comets back

More competition for UH Athletics, no thank you.

EXACTLY what i first thought

Having lived in NHL towns, I can tell you that there is VERY LITTLE overlap between NHL regular ticket buyers and regular college sports ticket buyers.

VERY different audiences.

Little direct competition for the entertainment dollar.

That’s absolutely NO excuse for a market as large as Houston not having a NHL team, much less a good reason for any of us to oppose Houston having one.

Are people here also saying that having the WNBA will reduce interest in UH sports like women’s basketball, and should be opposed on that basis following similar logic.

Come on now.

That’s ABSURD.

What about the NFL? Should we not have the Texans under the theory that having the NFL in town might hurt interest in UH football?

Get serious.

Sure doesn’t hurt aTm and UT’s football fan interest in Houston. They still drive out from Houston en masse every college football Saturday.

That’s dumb.

I’m not surprised. The WNBA is starting to finally make some money.

Is that part of the Caitlin Clark Effect?

She’s a big part of it, but it’s not just her. ESPN has been pushing the women’s college basketball games hard the past few years and it’s had a lasting effect that’s transcended into the WNBA, once those college players make it there. The players finally formed a union and now make a bit more money that a buck fifty. Anyone that can get a team now on the cheap sees large growth in the future.

I have nothing against WNBA or women’s basketball. I just have a limited amount of time and there is and endless supply of choices. Even though I’m retired and live alone, I can’t keep up with every sport and/or every TV show. And I still like to go camping and fishing, walk my dog, smoke and grill meats, ride my bike, etc. And I always have house work and yard work to do. I amazed at how well some of y’all manage your time and get so much accomplished. All that to say, I don’t find women’s basketball interesting enough to devote much if any time to it. In fact I just now spent more time thinking about it than I have the previous 11 months or whenever it was when that gal “broke” the NCAA scoring record. .

This exactly. Between college and pro football, college basketball, and MLB I am tapped out.

Oh, He definitely knows that.

Interesting that Fertitta bought the Sun to resurrect the Comets, with knowledge that the WNBA would have a new collective bargaining agreement. The team salary cap increased to $7M and there is now revenue sharing, which create more expenses for the owners, but I am sure Fertitta had his smart people review the agreement and found it is still a good business deal.

For actually attending games, I’m down to UH basketball and football. Used to go to 10-15 Astros games a year and all the playoffs, now I go to maybe 2 games a year. Pro sports are an absolute rip-off, Im perfectly fine just watching them on TV or at a bar. Owners treat fans like suckers, yet people keep going. Like PT Barnum said…

The WNBA is popular right now…greatly due to the Caitlin Clark effect. Dallas is in the process of moving their team from Arlington to downtown Dallas.

I don’t know the specifics but maybe the Comets will help with Toyota Center utilization?

Also, note the alignment with UH women’s sports. Eddie Nuñez hires a highly regarded women’s basketball coach (instead of replacing baseball) and Fertitta brings the WNBA back to Houston. These are smart men. Funny to read the criticism on this board!

From the HBJ: Houstonians have been clamoring for the Comets to come back. A survey the University of Houston released in July 2025 showed 64% of residents would be enthusiastic for a WNBA team in the city.

It is not something I watch, but that is patently wrong. Every WNBA team except 3 averaged more fans per game than UH basketball and the league drew on average 1.2M viewers per game last year. There is a reason Tillman bought a team, and it isn’t entirely for a tax write-off
