Good article in the Chron about “Gil Steinke. Head football coach and athletic director for 23 seasons at his alma mater, then-Texas A&I (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville), Steinke and his Javelinas won 10 Lone Star Conference championships and six NAIA national championships. When he retired at the end of the 1976 season, the Javs were on a 39-game winning streak.”

I attended A&I for one semester when I lived at home (Premont) and commuted. My father was a friend of Steinke and big Javelina fan. He was indeed a legend in the area.
